| With the new teaching mode brought by new digital resources such as MOOC and NetEase Open Class, online learning has become a popular way to learn. There has been much research into how to improve the quality of these videos. The teacher’s instructional gestures are classical teaching gestures that have been shown to influence learners’ attention, and there are also studies that show that learners have different learning outcomes due to age differences in video learning. In summary, this study examines the effects of instructive gestures by teachers on learners of different ages in instructional videos.Based on eye-tracking technology, this study explored the effects of instructive gestures of teachers in instructional videos on the learning effectiveness, attention allocation, learning satisfaction and learning experience of learners of different age groups.A two-factor between-subjects design of 2(guidance mode:with instructive gestures, without gestures)x 2(age stage:children, adults)was used for the experiment.Through analysis of the experimental data from 73 subjects, the study showed that(1)in terms of learning effectiveness:there was a significant effect of learners’ age on learners’ learning effectiveness, specifically, adult learners’ learning effectiveness was better than child learners’ learning effectiveness. There was a borderline significant effect of the teacher’s instructional gestures on the learning effectiveness of the learners, specifically, the learning effectiveness of the learners in the group with instructional gestures was higher than that of the learners in the group without gestures.(2)In terms of attention allocation;the eye-movement data showed that the age of the learner had a significant effect on attention allocation,in that child learners were able to pay more rapid attention to the teacher’s figure in the video than adult learners. The teacher’s instructional gestures also had a significant effect on the distribution of attention,as learners who watched the video with the teacher’s instructional gestures were able to attend to the content area more quickly than learners who watched the video without the gestures.(3)Learning satisfaction:The age of the learner had a significant effect on learning satisfaction,as evidenced by the fact that child learners were more satisfied with their learning during the video than adult learners.(4)Learning experience:The age of the learner had a significant effect on the learning experience of the learner, specifically, the learning experience of the child learner was better than that of the adult learner during the video learning process.Through the above experiments, the following conclusions can be drawn:(1)The instructive gestures of teachers can attract the attention of learners of different age groups, which can improve their visual search efficiency and help them to locate the teaching content quickly.(2)The age difference of learners can affect the learning performance of learners, among which adult learners have the best learning effect, but child learners can quickly notice the teacher’s figure in the video, and their learning satisfaction and learning experience in the video learning are better than adult learners. The results of this empirical study on the effects of instructive gestures on age-group learners in instructional videos enrich the research on instructional videos and provide implications for the design and development of instructional videos for age-group learners. |
