Community participation refers to people’s involvement in educational programs. It promotes the preservation of local culture, heritage, experience, and ability, and a sense of community ownership. The definition of community engagement in a decentralized education system encompasses more than just community involvement in schools;it should ideally include people who have no involvement in the education system. This study was conducted in the Adami Tulu district of East Shoa Oromia Regional State in Ethiopia to assess community participation and educational decentralization in the primary schools and explore how families engage in their local schools.Data were collected in October and November 2020 using a qualitative approach(i.e.,interview).The study involved eight participants, including the district, directors, the Kebele Educational Training Board(KETB),the Parent-Teacher Association(PTA),and parents.Interviews with parents and school directors in Kelbo and Oitu kebele indicated that community participation in schools improved pupils’ school engagement and a sense of ownership in the community. However, community participation in schools was hindered by several factors, such as insufficient infrastructure,a homely school environment, and low quality of education. The school committee lacks knowledge and experience, which resulted in the schools’ overall poor performance in the lower household income were among the main factors that have affected the poverty, community capacity, and schools finance serious issue. The lack of necessary school infrastructure has led to low academic performance in the two primary schools, consequently affecting regional education growth. However, our study provides promising evidence that education decentralization and community engagement significantly shifted schools’ academic performance.
