An Experimental Study On The Influence Of Moral Elevation And Moral Outrage On Prosocial Behavior Of The College Students

Moral elevation and moral outrage as moral emotions two prototypes,can increase social intimacy,effectively promote the public’s prosocial behavior.Whether moral elevation and moral outrage affect a particular domain,moral elevation affects the charitable domain of prosocial behavior,while moral outrage affects the just domain of prosocial behavior.Whether the prosocial behavior in the face of unfair situations can be promoted by stimulating the moral elevation and moral outrage of college students,whether behavior is different by different stimuli,whether moral elevation will make the college students tend to compensation to treat people unfairly allocation,moral outrage let the college students tend to punish unfair distribution.In order to explore these issues,three studies were conducted,the effects of moral elevation and moral outrage on the charity,justice and fairness fields of the college students’ prosocial behavior.Study 1 was a 2(moral elevation: elevation and not elevation)×2(moral outrage: outrage and not outrage)between the subject design,in which the manipulated independent variables were moral elevation and moral outrage,the measured independent variable was moral identity,and the dependent variable was prosocial behavior(charity field).To select 119 subjects,divided into two stages,the first phase measuring moral identity,the second phase to watch video material,corresponding measure moral elevation,moral outrage and prosocial behavior(charity),to explore whether moral elevation and moral outrage influence the undergraduates’ prosocial behavior(charity),whether the moral identity play a moderating role.The results show that the main effect of moral elevation on prosocial behavior in the field of charity is extremely significant,the main effect of moral outrage on prosocial behavior in the field of charity is significant,and the prosocial effect of moral elevation is stronger.Moral identity did not play a moderating role.Study 2 was a 2(moral elevation: elevation and not elevation)×2(moral outrage: outrage and not outrage)between the subject design was used.The manipulated independent variables were moral elevation,moral outrage,the measured independent variables were moral identity,and the dependent variable was prosocial behavior(domain of justice).To select 137 subjects,divided into two stages,the first phase measuring moral identity,the second phase to watch video material,corresponding measure moral elevation,moral outrage and prosocial behavior(justice),to explore whether moral elevation and moral outrage influence the undergraduates’ prosocial behavior(justice),whether the moral identity play a moderating role.The results show that the main effect of moral outrage on prosocial behavior in the field of justice is significant,and the main effect of moral elevation on prosocial behavior in the field of justice is significant,and the prosocial effect of moral elevation is stronger.Moral identity did not play a moderating role.Study 3was a 2(moral elevation: elevation and not elevation)×2(moral outrage: outrage and not outrage)between the subject design.The independent variables were moral elevation and moral outrage,the measured independent variables were moral identity,and the dependent variable was prosocial behavior(fair field).To select 74 subjects,divided into three phases,the first phase measuring moral identity,the second phase to watch video material,corresponding measure moral elevation and moral outrage,the third stage third-party experiment game,exploring moral elevation and moral outrage on the college students are faced with unfair distribution scenarios have different tendency of prosocial behavior(punishment and compensation),and whether the moral identity play a moderating role.The results show that the main effect of moral elevation on compensation is significant,and the marginal effect of moral outrage on punishment is significant.Moral identity did not play a moderating role.The research conclusions are as follows:(1)Both moral elevation and moral outrage have unique prosocial behavior effects and can promote prosocial behavior of the college students.(2)Both moral elevation and moral outrage can promote the college students’ prosocial behavior in the field of charity,but moral elevation is more effective.(3)Both moral elevation and moral outrage can promote the college students’ prosocial behavior in the field of justice,but moral elevation is more effective.(4)In the face of unfair distribution,the college students who were stimulated by moral elevation tended to compensate those who were unfairly treated,while the college students who were stimulated by moral outrage tended to punish those who were unfairly distributed.
