Phonics as a way of learning has been used in English-speaking countries for many years. In China it also has gained more and more popularity these years.Studies on phonics in China mainly focus on the effectiveness of phonics to students’ vocabulary learning and phonetic learning. And in the recent years, researchers start to pay attention to the impacts of phonics on reading. However, studies on the application of phonics to reading aloud are not so much.As a matter of fact, reading aloud is an important way of learning. However, pupils as the beginners of language learning, are apt to give up reading aloud when meeting too many new words. Therefore, exploring whether phonics can help improve the ability of reading aloud is of practical value. This study chose 40 pupils as participants from a Shenzhen primary school. These students were taught by phonics for 16 weeks. And the data was collected by questionnaire, interview and test.By data analysis, the research findings are as follows:1.Before the experiment,no more than 50% students like English reading and most of them prefer reading silently to reading aloud. The main reason for them to give up reading aloud is that new words greatly reduce their reading fluency and interests. After the experiment, the subjects’ attitude towards English Reading Aloud has changed obviously.Students become more interested and confident in English Reading Aloud than before. And for low-level and middle-level students, the change of attitudes towards English Reading Aloud is especially obvious.Besides, their attitudes towards English Reading Aloud have nothing to do with gender.2.Phonics can improve pupils’ ability of reading aloud in the aspect of phonological awareness, spelling skills and reading aloud fluency. In the aspect of phonological awareness and spelling skills,low-level students made the greatest progress. As regard to reading fluency, highlevel students improved more than students of other levels. In addition, boys improved more than girls in phonological awareness. And in spelling skills and reading aloud fluency, both the boys and girls have made obvious progress. However, the degree of progress between them is not obviously distinct.
