Fear of missing out(Fo MO)is an anxious behavior that often occurs in the process of interpersonal communication because of information mismatch with group members. It is important for college students.Self-control ability is the ability of an individual to adjust and allocate one’s own cognitive resources,it rationally allocate cognitive resources to maintain the individual’s good interpersonal adaptability after encountering Fo MO.In the past years, the research on Fo MO in our country has just started, which belongs to a relatively new research field. In the past, researchers focused more on the overall impact of Fear of missing out on college students’ social adaptation, but they seldom paid attention to the impact of individual Fo MO on the sub-dimensions of interpersonal adaptation, and whether self-control ability played a role in it.Therefore, this study puts forward a series of research hypotheses and experiments on this basis to explore the influence of trait-Fo MO and state-Fo MO on the individual interpersonal adaptation of college students with different self-control abilities. In the first study,We collected 538 questionnaires to understand college students’ trait-Fo MO,self-control ability and interpersonal adaptation status, explore the relationship among them, and verify the moderating effect of self-control ability between trait-Fo MO and interpersonal adaptation status by using the College Students Self-Control Scale,Trait-State Fear of Missing Out Scale and Interpersonal Adaptation Subscale. The results of the study showed that: trait-Fo MO and interpersonal adaptation showed a significant negative correlation;trait-Fo MO and self-control ability showed a significant negative correlation;self-control ability and interpersonal adaptation showed a significant positive correlation;trait-Fo MO and self-control ability have a significant interaction effect.High trait-Fo MO group, that is,when the individual’s trait-Fo MO level is high, the interpersonal adaptability of individuals with high self-control is better than that of individuals with low self-control.Trait-Fo MO,as an individual’s own trait, has a long-term and profound impact on interpersonal adaptation. However,in daily life, college students will encounter various emergencies that lead to fear of missing out,and this anxiety is stateful, which may be gradually relieved by time factors, and may also be caused by the consumption of individual self-cognitive resources, which leads to subsequent interpersonal adaptation problems. Therefore, this study proposes study 2 to explore the impact of state-Fo MO on individuals’ interpersonal adaptation under different cognitive resource depletion conditions. The second study used a combination of situational experiments and questionnaire surveys on 120 college students to initiate the subjects’ state of failure anxiety, and collected the individual’s emotions, aggression and other interpersonal adaptation indicators through the questionnaire. After processing,it is concluded that the interactive effect of state-Fo MO and self-control ability is significant.high state-Fo MO individuals with high self-control have higher positive emotions and lower negative emotions and aggressive behavior tendencies than individuals with low self-control..In summary,we can get three conclusions:First, individuals with higher levels of trait-Fo MO have lower levels of interpersonal adaptation. The more serious the individual’s experience of state-Fo MO,the lower their level of interpersonal adaptation.Second, there was a significant negative correlation between fear of missing out and interpersonal adaptation.Self-control played a moderating role between them.Individuals with high self-control ability have less effect on interpersonal adaptation than those with low ability.Individuals with high self-control ability can effectively use cognitive resources to reduce the level of Fo MO,so that they can return to normal interpersonal situations more quickly.Third, whether it is trait-Fo MO or state-Fo MO,the interpersonal adaptation of individuals with high self-control is better than that of individuals with low self-control.So cultivating higher self-control ability of college students can effectively deal with the negative effects of Fo MO.In view of the above conclusions, this study advocates that college students need to communicate with their peers more.Through the interaction of information, students can be more aware of where the information gap between themselves is and how to make up for it.In the work of colleges and universities, counselors are the staff who contact with college students mostly. As a result, counselors can communicate with students in class meetings so that students can clearly understand the disadvantages of fear of missing out,and give students reasonable advice to help students overcome their anxiety. Finally, universities need to offer lectures on how to use self-control reasonably to help students understand the importance of self-control and how to use it suitably.
