James Yen is a famous educational theorist and practitioner in China,devoted his life to education and devoted himself to perfecting and practicing his educational theory.The civic education thought,which was formed at the critical moment of modern national crisis,is an important part of James Yen’s educational thought.Its civic education thought is rich in content,distinctive in features and rich in lasting meaning.This paper takes James Yen’s civic education thought as the research object,trying to systematically present the complete system of his civic education thought,and summarizing the unique connotation and profound insights contained in his thought.At the same time,based on the actual demand of the current education reform in China,it digs out its practical value,analyzes the enlightenment of its civic education thought to the current education work in China,and provides reference for the socialist education with Chinese characteristics in the new era.Based on the background and personal experience of James Yen’s civic education thought,this paper explores the origin and theoretical basis of his civic education thought.The formation of James Yen’s civic education thought is not only influenced by his family background and living environment,but also related to James Yen’s schooling experience in his youth and the historical environment in which the society lived at that time.James Yen not only absorbed the essence from the local educational thoughts in China,but also absorbed nutrition from western religions,philosophies and educators for his own use,which reflected the essence of the integration of Chinese and western cultures and formed a unique ideological system of civic education.At the same time,on the basis of literature analysis and inductive analysis,this paper systematically discusses the connotation of James Yen’s civic education thought.By distinguishing the relationship between civic education and civilian education and its internal components,it helps us to clarify the internal relationship between them,and further understand the status and important role of civic education.At the same time,the training objectives of civic education,that is,the three dimensions of knowledge,skills and emotions are clearly divided,and the educational purpose and direction of civic education ideas are clarified.The core contents of James Yen’s civic education thought: literacy education to cultivate intelligence,literary education to cultivate aesthetics,and moral education with physical and mental health all reflect the comprehensiveness of his thought,while the principles and ways of civic education interpret the essential core of James Yen’s civic education thought from multiple perspectives,and jointly build an ideal form of civic education system.Finally,on the basis of in-depth analysis of James Yen’s civic education thought,this paper correctly treats the unique value implication and limitations of civic education thought,and at the same time,it has reference value in vocational education,labor education,moral education and other aspects,combined with the current educational reality in China.
