A Study Of Spatial Narratives In Hollywood Science Fiction Films

In 1902,with a 14 minute movie "space travel" directed by Merrill,science fiction film officially kicked off.It has a history of more than 100 years.With the development of modern science and technology as well as the constant updating of film technology,science fiction films are shaping one audio-visual feast after another by using audio-visual language.Film is an art of combining time and space.Before the end of the 20 th century,scholars focused on the dimension of time and ignored the role of space in narration.At the end of the 20 th century,"space turn" began to receive the attention of scholars in various fields,and the field of narratology and film narrative also began to study the film space.As a mature type of science fiction film,the visual effect of space directly affects the success of the film.Science fiction films need imagination and technology to create a virtual space with a sense of reality.Space plays an important role in science fiction film narration.Space is always there and drives the story.This paper focuses on Hollywood science fiction films and studies the significance and function of their movie space.The author studies the space of Hollywood sci-fi films,classifies and summarizes the presentation types of Hollywood sci-fi films,and probes into the characteristics of space narrative.Firstly,activate the control of time,enhance the free imagination of narrative,secondly,the space is always present,create a real virtual space,and finally find the narrative structure of the film in the transformation of time and space.The presentation of different spaces can promote the development of the plot,enhance the narrative tension of the space,and express the filmmaker's philosophical thinking of the current world in the space presentation.It also analyzes the role of space narrative in the development of plot and narrative tension of the film,and explores the cultural connotation conveyed by the film space,so as to provide theoretical basis for the development of Chinese native science fiction films.
