Father Henry Serruys is one of the most outstanding scholarly missionary prist of C.I.C.M.as well as an acknowledged expert of Chinese and Mongolian history.He joined the C.I.C.M.at the age of 18,and left for the mission in North China and Inner Mongolia and worked there until he moved to the United States in 1948.His remaining years were dedicated to studies and research.Among his dozens of articles and six publications focused on Mongolian history of Ming Dynasty,the relationship between Mongolia and Ming government,and Mongolian history of modern times,his greatest achievement was the research of the relationship between Mongolia and Ming Dynasty.The paper studies the research of history of Chinese ethnic minorities with a case study of the academic history of Father Henry Serruys(1911-1983),especially of his research on the Mongolian history of Ming Dynasty.The writer tries to conclude the characteristic of his research method by analyzing the fruit of his scholarly labour.The paper consists three chapters as followings:Chapter one introduces the family and education background of Father Henry Serruys.He was born in Belgium,accustomed to plurilingual environment.He joined the C.I.C.M.at the age of 18 and ordained a priest at the age of 26.He left for the mission in China in 1937,during the stormy period of the country's War of Resistance against Japanese and War of Liberation.In Chapter two,the writer reviews the fruit of Father Henry Serruys's studies classified according to the subject of his articles and publications.Many of his work have not been translated to Chinese.In Chapter three,the writer tries to draw the characteristic of Father Henry Serruys's research by looking into his research subject,the supporting materials and the research method he used.Being a widely acknowledged scholar in the western world,Father Henry Serruys and his studies have not been equally well-known in China.By presenting and analyzing dozens of his articles and publications,this paper tries to help the Chinses academia learn more about Father Henry Serruys and his achievements on the Mongolian history of Ming Dynasty.
