The purpose of studying the theory of philology of Rong Geng,a famous philologist in the last century,is to summarize his theories and thoughts of philology and compare him with other philologists in order to objectively summarize his contributions and shortcomings in the history of philology. In addition to the introduction,it consists of four chapters, which summarize and comment on Rong Geng's theory of philology from different perspectives,as follows:The first chapter is the life of rong geng and his writings. The three books that are mainly introduced are Zhong Guo Wen Zi Xue Xing Pian,Zhong Guo Wen Zi Xue Yi Pian,Jian Ti Zi Dian. The second chapter is the study of Rong Geng's classification of the script styles.Rong Geng divided the Chinese characters into six categories:guwen script, small seal script, clerical script, standard script, cursive script and running script. He defined and argued for each category. In general, the classification principles are reasonable and the boundaries are clear. However,he also has some problems in the subdivision of specific subclasses. For example, the names of major classes and minor classes both use the name of guwen script, which causes confusion in logic. In addition, the classification of miu zhuan is not appropriate. The third chapter is the theoretical study of Rong Geng's Six Writing, which is divided into two parts. The first part is to extract Rong Geng's views on the Six Writing, mainly from the definition, classification and the acceptance of characters to research. We find that although he occasionally has new ideas, but he still basically follows the old definition of the Six Writing. His classification is also too simple and there are also some errors in the classification of specific Chinese characters. The second part mainly discusses the reasons and significance of Rong Geng's attributing the Six Writing to the Yi Pian. The reason why ronggeng attributed the Six Writing to the Yi Pian is that he regarded the Six Writing as the regulations of Chinese characters meaning and interpretation. This practice was quite innovative at that time and promoted the development of stylistic semantics. The fourth chapter is the study of Rong Geng's view on simplification of Chinese characters, which is divided into two parts:the necessity of simplification of Chinese characters and the method of Chinese character simplification. On the necessity of simplification of Chinese characters,Rong Geng focused on the natural evolution of Chinese characters from complexity to simplicity.Jian Ti Zi Dian and My Comments on The Simplified Chinese Characters Scheme(Draft)contain Rong Geng's simplified Chinese characters methods. There are mainly Pian Pang Lei Tui Jian Hua,Shi Yong Li Shi Jian Hua Zi Xing,Shi Yong Lian Bi Jian Bi Jian Hua and so on.These methods were later adopted by the Chinese characters reform commission. On the simplification of Chinese characters,Rong Geng had both theory and practice, which made a great contribution to the reform of Chinese characters. The fifth chapter is the general comment on Rong Geng's literary theory.Rong Geng's literary theory achievements are mainly reflected in three aspects.Firstly,he is good at absorbing and using newly unearthed materials and the research results of ancient Chinese characters.Secondly,it is an innovative idea that he ascribes all the six books to righteousness, which is of great significance in the exploration of morphological semantics.Thirdly,as for the simplification of Chinese characters, the methods adopted by Rong Geng, such as the simplification of sidewise analogy, careful substitution of homophony, the subtraction of successive strokes, and the simplification of historical glyphics, are scientific and systematic, which promoted the simplification of Chinese characters.Of course,Rong Geng has some shortcomings.Such as his definition and use of some categories are not strict enough. His definition and classification of the six books are relatively simple, and the simplification of a few Chinese characters is not reasonable and so on.But in spite of his flaws,Rong Geng has made many contributions to the construction of literary theory in the 20th century.
