Throughout an overview of the history of China's sport's development,the truth is that sports translation has played an important role in promoting the modernization process of its sport.In view of the lack of systematic research on sports translation history,this paper tries to restore its overall picture,through studying the sports translation activities in China in the late Qing Dynasty from the perspectives of sports history,translation history and history science,ect.The all contents include the historical background of sports translation activities at that time,the subjects and objects of translation,the choice of translation methods,and the characteristics of translation activities,and the significance of translation activities to the development of modern Chinese sports.The main body of the article first introduces the basis and significance of the topic,analyses the current research status of the topic,and at the same time,the scope of the paper and methods are clarified.After that,on the basis of expounding the social and cultural context of the rise and development of sports translation in the late Qing Dynasty,the thesis combs the sports translation activities in the late Qing Dynasty from the aspects of the subject and object of translation,the choice of translation methods and strategies,etc.On the one hand,important individuals and groups as objects are separately introduced,especially the main force of translation--overseas students in Japan.On the other hand,it introduces some publishing houses that published contents of sport translation,including The Christian Literature Society for China by the missionaries,and The Press for Textbooks and The Civilization Press by the overseas students in Japan.All these translators and publishing houses have provided a support for the translation activities.The main contents of translation are collected and analyzed from professional sports books or textbooks,foreign sports systems and foreign sports education theories.During the late Qing Dynasty,the way of sports translation has transformed from “translated by the western and written by Chinese” to translated by Chinese independently,and translation methods include abridgement,compilation,adaptation and literal translations.The interaction of translation reveals the influence of sports translation in the late Qing Dynasty on the development of modern sports,such as updating the traditional teaching system,determining the status of sports in school sports,and promoting the development of women's sports;disseminating the knowledge of sports teaching materials and teaching methods,which provides a paradigm for the following sports textbooks;and promoting the reform of Chinese sports.Based on the survey of sports translation activities in the late Qing Dynasty,the conclusion part summarizes a series of general characteristics of sports translationactivities in the late Qing Dynasty,including the value orientation of "saving the nation through sports",the enhancement of initiative and professionalism of the main body of translation,rich content,diverse and specific methods.While acknowledging its historical contributions of sports translation activities at that time to the promotion of modern sports and social development,the paper points out its main deficiencies and proposes some personal suggestions on how to better conduct sports translation in Sino-foreign exchange: facing the advanced foreign sports thoughts,sports education theories and ect,we should insist on selective introduction;promote and deepen the two-way and multi-directional sports translation exchange;in order to better carry out sports translation activities,the professional quality of sports translators should be improved.
