The issues of inheriting and innovation is a long-lasting theme in rethinking the development of the Chinese Painting.Though different cultural contexts lead to their unique traits and styles in visual presentation,the cross-cultural comparative research is a way that could allow for the innovation of the forms of traditional Chinese Painting in art which incorporates both the tradition of the nation and foreign beneficial visible resources.Reviewing the laws of development of the world art history,it is well acknowledged that the contributing factors to innovation can be categorized into extrinsic and intrinsic aspect.Thus,from the perspective of the ‘the general view of painting’,conducting further research together with absorbing the value and conceptual ideas from a wilder art realm,by comparatively research the methodology of promoting the development of the Chinese painting innovatively,is a crucial research topic in the research of Chinese painting and visual communication during my graduate studies.This dissertation aims at exploring the common as well as the differing elements between Chen Zizhuan’s and David Hockney’s art theory,viewpoints,and art practices methodologies by utilizing the examples of their landscape painting artworks.Basically,in both commonalities and difference,the research methodologies are rooted in comparation of the cultural context between the two artists,which allows for better understanding the reasons behind the formation of the artists’ cognition and concepts.The research is based on the aspects of spatial structure and the expression of objects,and will go further into the intrinsic of the artwork,with analysing the Ideological factors that influence the visual presentation of artworks.Chen achieved freedom from art and mental level,which are influenced by his experience from deep research in tradition and co-existence with nature.While David realised his value of subjective art creation with integrating multicultural ideas into his art philosophy.The forms and methodologies in the two artists’ artwork presentation are different,but both of them create relative value and influence significantly in their art realm.The significance of the research on my own art practices,is to frame a specific research aim,and influencing my art practices through studying the mutuality difference and visibility of the two artists and their artworks.
