Fortune-telling is a kind of folk custom behavior,especially in the background of traditional culture is more typical.Fortune-telling behavior is non-scientific and irrational,and in the rapid development of science and technology today,such mindless means are becoming more and more intense.Stress is the main reason for people to turn to fortune-telling.For many individuals,what is the relationship between fortune-telling behavior and their ability to cope with stress,whether the process of fortune-telling really helps them to cope with stress better,and what is the role of fortune-telling in this process for individuals? This study will explore the above problems.The research is divided into two parts.Qualitative research and quantitative research are respectively used to explore the psychological mechanism of fortune-telling behavior as a stress coping strategy.Study 1 is a quantitative study.In the form of questionnaire survey and scale test,fortune-telling behavior and demographic variables were analyzed,and the mental resilience scores and stress coping scores of individuals with different fortune-telling experiences and behavioral tendencies were compared.Results of study 1: in terms of mental resilience and stress coping scores,compared with individuals who did not have experience in fortune-telling and fortune-telling,individuals who had experience in fortune-telling and fortune-telling all showed higher scores,and showed significant differences in mental resilience scores.In other words,individuals with previous fortune-telling experiences developed a greater ability to cope with stress,and individuals with higher mental resilience showed a higher tendency to engage in fortune-telling behaviors.Study 2 is qualitative research.In the form of semi-structured interview,focusing on specific behavioral and psychological processes,the research is carried out on individuals with fortune-telling experience.Based on grounded theory paradigm,the use of QSR Nvivo11.0 analysis software to encode interview text analysis,surrounding the "what kind of mental state and behavior driven individual fortune tellers divination behavior","fortune divination behavior at the individual to cope with stress in the process of how to effect" and "what are the factors which influence the effect of the" three topics are summarized and finishing,respectively.Results of study 2: under various stressors that caused increased uncertainty and decreased sense of control,individuals' negative emotions,decreased behavioral motivation,increased irrational beliefs and insufficient sense of support all contributed to the increase of fortune-telling tendency,which led to individuals' turning to fortune-telling.The process of fortune-telling may have both positive and negative effects on individuals' coping with stress.The positive effect includes relieving negative emotions,enhancing behavioral motivation and enriching coping resources,while the negative effect includes increasing other negative emotions and reducing subjective initiative.In addition,the influencing factors include trust,flexibility,behavior frequency and content acquisition.Comprehensive study 1 and study 2 can result to the following conclusion:compared with the individual who had no fortune-telling or divination experience before,people have experience with higher compressive ability.In the behavior of divination or prediction,the process will have effect on the process of the stress response by specific mechanisms,in the end of this paper discuss on how to reduce the fortune-telling phenomenon and avoid its negative effects are also proposed.
