Since time is irreversible, the interpreter continuously receives information in the source language when memorizing.Furthermore, when taking notes and finally outputting the interpretation in the target language, the interpreter has a recall process of which logic is contrary to memorizing. These factors lead the interpreter to face the gradual accumulation of memory content and the gradual complication of memory logic. In order to overcome these difficulties, from the perspective of short-term memory, this study divides short-term memory into immediate memory, active memory, and working memory, clarifies their respective characteristics and interrelationships, explores memory strategies of English-Chinese(or Chinese-English)consecutive interpreting, summarizes the characteristics and defects of the interpreters' short-term memory in the EnglishChinese-English consecutive interpretation practice, and analyzes the correlation between the interpreter's short-term memory problems and interpretation quality. After that, three kinds of memory optimization methods are further designed in this research for notetaking process, scattered information processing process, and target language output process. And there is an overall strategy applying these specific methods in whole or in part. Finally, the optimized new strategy is applied to the second practice(recurrence test). The plausibility of the new strategy is evaluated from memory efficiency and target language quality. It is concluded that in English-Chinese-English consecutive interpreting, assigning extra attention to summing up logic will not reduce the interpretation output efficiency. Also,it is beneficial to improve the interpretation quality by assigning active memory to the original information recording work, such as note taking, and by using working memory to form reorganized logic.
