To Live,a representative work of writer Yu Hua,tells a story of the ups and downs of a man's fate.As a transformation work of Yu Hua,it has been 29 years since it first appeared in public view. The original version was published in 1992 in Harvest in the form of a novella.Later in 1993,it was rewritten inspired by the suggestions made by Zhang Yimou when it was adapted into the movie version, and published as a pamphlet, which is the expanded version of the novel analyzed and studied in this article. The artistic value of the novel itself, domestic and foreign literary criticism, film and television drama adaptations, star effects, critics' interpretations and comments, general readers' dissemination and acceptance, the writing of literary history, and the intervention of literary education constitute the multiple paths to the canonization of To Live. This article is divided into three chapters, and each chapter is divided into three sections for discussion. The first chapter analyzes the text and explores the artistic value and interpretable space of the novel through the analysis of the ideological implication, death image and narrative structure of the novel to confirm its classic character.Firstly, this chapter analyzes the theme of To Live, combined with Yu Hua's interpretations about the novel in his self-preface and other articles.Secondly, combined with Yu Hua's literary views shown in his essays, this chapter analyzes the path of constructing death images, death situations, and death symbols to verify the novel's thinking on the meaning of existence and the reflection of human nature through intensive reading. Finally, this chapter analyzes the exemplary nature of the narrative structure of the novel to prove its classic character. The second chapter discusses the influence of the dissemination and acceptance of To Live on the canonization of the novel. This chapter investigates the status of To Live dissemination and acceptance through sorting out the awards of To Live, the acceptance of film and television drama adaptation, sales, media participation, celebrity effects, the acceptance of novels at home and abroad, the writing of literary history, and the intervention of literary education. The third chapter discusses the influence of the three art forms adapted from To Live on the canonization of the novel. This chapter reveals the fact that the adaptations of To Live played a huge role in promoting dissemination and acceptance by describing the dissemination and acceptance of the three adaptation art forms of To Live(movies,TV series, dramas)and the comparing three adaptation forms with the original novel. The generation of the classics is a social and historical process that unfolds continuously in a certain time and space, and is the result of the "combined forces" of many social, cultural, political and ideological factors. The canonization of To Live came into being in a cumulatively formed model. It has been widely disseminated and accepted internationally and domestically. The literary meaning of the novel has been continuously enriched in the process of adapting into film and television drama versions, being recorded in literary history, and being inherited by literary education. The unfolding of discussions supported by related theories and interpretation, communication and reception studies, provides ideas for in-depth interpretation of the canonization of the novel. The canonization of To Live has benefited from the diversified acceptance and understanding of many readers. The canonization process of To Live provides a reference for discovering the law of canonization of literary works. This thesis aims to get a glimpse of the law of canonization of literary works by analyzing the canonization process of the novel To Live.
