The English Key Competencies consist of linguistic ability,thinking quality,cultural awareness and learning ability.Combined with Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives,analyzing NMET reading comprehension from the perspective of the English Key Competencies is not only good for discovering the characteristics of NMET reading comprehension,but also helpful for improving the quality of English reading teaching and students' reading performance,which is also an important way for students to develop the English Key Competencies.According to the theories of the English Key Competencies and Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives,the analysis of NMET reading comprehension in the past five years reveals the following characteristics:(1)The reading comprehension texts reflect the examination of cultural awareness and learning ability in a specific context;(2)NMET reading questions reflect the examination of factual knowledge and highlight the testing of language skills(3)The NMET reading comprehension focuses on students' understanding of the text,with an emphasis on logical thinking.Based on these characteristics,the instructional design strategies are put forward: Firstly,teachers should strengthen students' interpretation of the context and genre of the text,thus help students improve their overall comprehension on the text.Secondly,teachers should instruct students to learn to use mind maps so as to cultivate get their logical thinking ability improved.At the same time,teachers should encourage students to evaluate and appreciate the article with their own understanding,in this way students' critical thinking ability.Teachers should also improve students' creative thinking by questioning.Thirdly,teachers should instruct students to deepen their understanding of the cultural elements in the text,try to broaden their cultural horizons through cultural comparisons,and help them build cultural confidence,deepen their understanding of the cultural connotations of different language backgrounds as well as improve their linguistic and cultural awareness.Lastly,on the one hand,teachers must know the needs of students so as to stimulate their interest in reading and broaden their reading learning channels,on the other hand,the teachers should pass on appropriate learning strategies to students so as to improve their learning efficiency.Based on the instructional design strategies above,in the teaching practice of reading lesson : "The Chinese Writing System: Connecting the Past and the Present",we can get the following conclusions : Firstly,in lead-in,teachers can use some interesting activities such as“brainstorming” to stimulate students' interest in learning,these activities can also activate students' background knowledge.Secondly,in the process of reading,teachers can use a variety of mind maps to help students analyze the structures of different kinds of texts in order to develop their logical thinking.Thirdly,teachers can help develop students' critical thinking with debates.In general,the instructional design based on the English Key Competencies has improved students' comprehensive linguistic ability and stimulated their interest in learning English reading,but some problems also have been found in the teaching practice,that is,students have an unbalanced development on linguistic ability and they are also lack of independent thinking ability.Therefore,some advice are concluded : 1.Teachers should communicate with students in English more often in class,which can create a good language environment to strengthen students' listening and speaking skills,and help develop their linguistic ability in an all-round way.2.Teachers should possess the abilities of changing their ways of raising questions or just changing the questions according to the different levels of students,thus students can improve their independent thinking ability.In this way,the development of students' subject key competencies is highlighted in the English reading instructional design.
