Expression Of Personal Beliefs In Work

Personal beliefs play an important role in the process of art creation.With the changing of artist's beliefs,the awakening of people's consciousness also start to change,which give birth to different artistic characteristics.To better analyze the effect of personal beliefs on artistic subject,process,techniques,I choose two special artists and discuss their works: Liang Kai and Wolfgang Laib.As artists with distinct personalities from different periods and different backgrounds,their works show very strong personal characteristics,which are closely related to their personal beliefs.Liang Kai lived in the period of Emperor Ningzong in the Southern Song Dynasty,a significant Zen period.His creative works had a great influence on traditional paintings— "the painting method changed from Liang Kai".Liang Kai's "Zen Paintings"(usually referred to his "brush-reducing" and "splash-ink" style)express his personal belief from subject to technique.The core of his belief is the recognition and conviction of the mind;Wolfgang Laib is an important contemporary artist.Though grew up in Germany after World War II,he is strongly interested and convinced in philosophy of Lao Tzu,as well as Hinduism,Jainism and Buddhism.The Oriental philosophy and his early life experiences led him to form unique personal conviction of life and world,which is totally different from the western culture dominated by ‘science' and ‘ rationality'.His belief in the spiritual existence of humans made him abandon medicine study and turn to art creation,which also became an essential part of his artistic method.By discussing the two artists' works,I begin to reflect on my own artistic practice and adjust my idea in the process of art exploration.
