"All visual arts must deal with the problem of light according to its characteristics.""Light inspires art,religion and science.For theologians and philosophers,light exists as an " idea ";For scientists,light exists as a scientific object;For artists,light exists as the medium,method,language,purpose and spirit of painting.The light of painting is closely related to the light of philosophy and the light of science,and the light of painting has the abstraction of the light of idea.The conditions and guarantees for the formation of the natural light of painting."For most of the history,the light of ideas and the light of nature have had a lasting and profound influence on the light of painting.It was not until Newton and other scientists thoroughly quantified the properties of light in modern times that light was no longer mysterious to human beings and could no longer symbolize philosophical concepts or theological concepts in people's cognition.At this time,only the scientific level of natural light has an impact on the light of painting.For example,the birth of Impressionism was based on the latest theory of light and color.But with the development of technology,it seems that natural light no longer needs painting to practice its theory.The advent of photography put painting in crisis."Painting is dead," said Paul de la Roche after seeing a photograph for the first time in 1893.At the same time,the theory of expression which is different from the traditional theory of imitation appeared in the academic circle.Therefore,we can see that the post-impressionist painters who supported the theory of expression no longer insisted on imitating reality and created paintings that more expressed themselves,thus opening up the modern painting.When imitating reality is no longer needed,the light of painting in the traditional sense is disappearing.Although this prevented painting from being replaced by photography,with the emergence of more diversified art forms after World War II,the significance of painting began to be questioned by people.In 2004,Tuymans was named as one of the 100 most influential people in the international ART world by Art Review,and regarded by critics as a strong proof of the declaration that "painting can't die".In a 2012 interview,Tuyman said,"I've always believed that;You can never get art from art,art has to come from reality." He rejected the logic of modern painting and emphasized the focus on reality.To this end,Tuymans uses film and television(and,increasingly,computer screens)as a source of light,successfully reclaiming the light of painting,reconstructing the connection between painting and reality,and revitalizing painting.So this paper will take Tuymans as a case to analyze the evolution of light in painting.The first chapter of this paper summarizes Tuymans' painting concept of focusing on reality and how light reflects reality in paintingThe second chapter of this paper summarizes people's different cognition of light in different historical periods from ancient Greece to present,and the reasons behind these cognition,such as philosophical thinking,the influence of religion,and the development of science and technology.The third chapter of this paper summarizes the relationship between light and color and objective objects in different periods of paintingThe fourth chapter of this paper analyzes the reasons why light was rediscovered in Tuymans' paintingsThe last part of this paper is the conclusion...
