An Exploration Of The Legitimacy Of "suspended Judgment"

Although the concept of " suspension judgment " has been proposed since the beginning of philosophy,it has never been the focus of philosophers.By contrast,the other two attitudes of belief(belief and disbelief)have attracted the attention of many philosophers,suspension judgment is a kind of belief attitude or epistemological position that neither believes nor disbelieves,neither affirms nor negates.The pursuit of deterministic knowledge has persisted throughout the history of western philosophy,but with the change of the direction of epistemology research,the exploration of deterministic problems has gradually shifted to the inquiry of "how knowledge is possible".It is under this background that more and more philosophers realize that there is a huge theoretical possibility behind the "suspension judgment" which was neglected before.Based on a such understanding,this paper explored the philosophical purpose,method and legitimacy of "suspension judgment" in the period of Pyrrhonism,Descartes and Husserl.Pyrrhonism,represented by Sextus,first proposed the concept of "suspension judgment".This concept was mainly used for ethical purposes.Pyrrhonism believed that set your own mind and do not make any judgments of right and wrong in order to achieve a state of peace of mind and so-called "untouched" state,and lived a free life with unattachment,undisturbed,and inner peace.Descartes did not directly use the name "suspension judgment" but used "general doubt" to exercise the methodological meaning of "suspension judgment",on this basis,he established the unquestionable "I think"(Cogito)as the starting point for understanding.The cognition activity changed from object-centered to subject-centered,and then a major change in the field of philosophical epistemology was realized.In Husserl's philosophy,"suspension judgment" is in a conspicuous and important position.On the one hand,Husserl inherited the epistemological line of Descartes' " general doubt ",on the other hand,he also used the concept of "epoché" of Pyrrhonism to exercise the function of general doubt.On the basis of suspending naturalistic attitudes and critical psychological cognition,Husserl used the method of essential reduction and the intentional structure of consciousness to overcome the epistemological problems of Descartes' dualism and Kant's unknowable matter.The key point of Husserl's solution to the problem of cognition is on the side of the pure subject,that is,the realization of the self-presentation of the object itself and the knowledge of its essence in the pure consciousness.After completing the above difficult analysis and combing,this article attempts to dabble in the research methods of modern language philosophy,trying to show that when facing the problem of "equivalence",truth and utility as the criterion of belief norms can be reconciled on "suspension judgment".At the same time,we also pay attention to the close relationship between "inquiry" and "suspension",which has become another theoretical basis for the legitimacy of "suspension judgment".
