A Study Of The German Translation Of Journey To The West From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Xiyouji is one of the "Four Great Classic Romans" of China.But for a long time people could only read the German translation of this novel only in excerpts.It was not till in 2016 that the first full German translation of Xiyouji was published.The transmission of this classic is a great challenge for sinologist Eva Lüdi Kong.But she has achieved great success through her efforts and her translation is recognized by the German-speaking readers.In this thesis translation of the designation,numerical data and units of measurement as well as slogans and proverbs in the German translation of Lüdi Kong are analyzed from the perspective of the Skopos theory.From the results of the investigation it can be seen that the translator Lüdi Kong mainly applied the literal translation according to the principles of the Skopos theory and in certain cases opted for transliteration and free translation in order to fulfill the translation purpose better.
