Marlene Dumas(1953--)was an outstanding South African female artist in the 20th century.She used bold brushwork to depict the social plight of women,children,people of color and other disadvantaged groups.She is famous for her figurative paintings with complex identities.From the perspective of metaphor,this paper studies the painting images of Marlene Dumas in different periods,explores the social phenomenon of her painting metaphor,and explains the significance and value of this technique of expression.This paper is divided into three parts.In the first part,the concept,classification and development of metaphor as well as the causes and types of painting metaphor are analyzed in detail,and the metaphorical phenomenon in western painting is analyzed with examples.The second part focuses on the research and description of the images of women,children,violence and death in Marlene Dumas’ s paintings.Combining with the artist’s personal experience,the author explores a series of social issues such as racism,violent conflict and political oppression as metaphors behind the images.The third part elaborates on the reasons why Marlene Dumas’ s paintings show metaphorical features,analyzes her unique spiritual artistic expression as a female artist,and summarizes the significance and value of her metaphorical paintings.In this paper,we study concluded that Marlene dumas metaphor of painting art value,is not only sensitive to social events made no secret of performance,more is from the perspective of women’s sensibility of various social phenomenon happened pester and search for the source of the metaphorical expression of the process of contemporary artists have theoretical and practical guidance.It makes us think deeply about the emotional and spiritual outpouring of Marlene Dumas’ s works as well as the phenomena of The Times revealed by her paintings while we are watching them. |
