Under the comparison of Chinese and Western traditional paintings, the flatness is a more prominent artistic feature in Chinese traditional paintings. With the integration of Chinese and Western cultures, especially the construction of "Xu Jiang System" in the exploration and practice of Chinese modern figure painting, the three-dimensional realistic figure painting has once become a new style of Chinese modern ink figure painting. In fact,at present, the realistic three-dimensional in western art has been dissolved to some extent, and the contemporary Chinese ink painting figures are also experiencing the planar expression of the three-dimensional style not long after the construction, which may be regarded as the return from the three-dimensional to the planar.Lu Chen is just a practitioner of this transformation. His ink figure paintings changed from the three-dimensional style in the early stage to the flat style in the later stage, presenting two completely different styles.Firstly, this paper analyzes the planarity of painting.Through the analysis of the process of Lu Shen’s ink figure painting changing from three-dimensional to plane, its motivation and significance, combined with his own creation practice, this paper explores a possibility of the development of contemporary ink figure painting.
