Nowadays, the comparative research on Chinese and Vietnamese human body words mostly focuses on comparing Chinese and Vietnamese idioms and colloquialisms from the perspective of traditional linguistics. There is not many articles that use cognitive linguistics as the guiding theory and use a single type of human body words as the research object to compare the two languages. Therefore, this article selects Chinese and Vietnamese "hand"(?/tay)as the research object. This article is based on The Conceptual Metaphor Theory of Lakoff&Jonhson,The Conceptual Metonymy Theory of Radden&Kovecses;and uses descriptive interpretation, comparative analysis to classify the metaphors and metonymy phenomena in the Chinese and Vietnamese "hand" word. The sources of examples are from the Beijing Language and Culture University and Vietnamese Corpus. These examples are used to illustrate and analyze, aiming to find out the cognitive similarities and differences of "hand" in the two languages.By comparison,it is found that there are many similarities in not only the meaning expansion of monosyllabic words "?" and "tay",but also in their metaphors and metonymy phenomena. This shows that the meaning expansion of word has certain rules, not random. Moreover,it also proves the universality of metaphorical cognition and metonymy cognition. The main content of this article includes five parts,as follows:The“Introduction" explains the reasons for choosing the topic, point out the current research situation of China and Vietnam, and introduces the research subjects, linguistic sources and research methods of this article. The first chapter explores and compares the meanings of "shou"(hand)and"tay"(hand)based on the interpretation of the meanings of "?" and "tay" in“??????”(Modern Chinese Dictionary)and "Tù diên tiêng Viêt"(Vietnamese Dictionary). The second chapter draws on the conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff&Johnson to explain that the metaphors of the word group "?" and "tay" is divided into three categories:orientational metaphors, ontological metaphors and structural metaphors;then analyze and compare them. The third chapter adopts Radden&Kovecses' conceptual metonymy classification method to classify the metonymy of the "?" and "tay" word group in Chinese and Vietnamese into two major categories:metonymy between whole and part, and metonymy between part and part;then analyze and compare them. The "Conclusion" summarizes the whole content of the article, explains the deficiencies of this article and the prospect of future research.
