Swing is one of the most outstanding and distinctive music types in American Jazz in the20 th century. It originated in the early 1930 s and became popular in New York from 1935 to 1945.Swing can be said to be the transformation of Jazz artistic style. It relies on the “free and uninhibited” and very swinging music language to “subvert” the previous traditional style, occupy people's hearts and lives, and successfully break the stubborn concept of “racial discrimination”after leading people out of the shadow of the economic crisis. It has a profound artistic value and influence on Jazz and even American music. Therefore, this paper aims to make a comprehensive historical exposition of the heyday of the “Swing Era”(1935-1945),in order to explore the music premise, development overview, artistic characteristics, representatives and status value of Swing to a certain extent. This paper consists of three chapters. In chapter one, analyzes the artistic influence of the two musical preconditions “Ragtime” and “New Orleans Jazz” on Swing. In the second chapter,on the one hand,it describes the social background of Swing and its development in the past ten years;on the other hand,it studies its four artistic features of “band establishment”,“rhythm”,“harmony characteristics” and “singing style” to show the “common” characteristics of Swing; In the third chapter, the author takes two representative musicians in different artistic fields composer “Duke Ellington” and singer “Ella Fitzgerald” as examples to state the “personality” characteristics of Swing creation and artistic interpretation, and then summarizes their artistic contributions to Swing. Finally, based on the above discussion,in view of the artistic style and spiritual connotation of Swing, which has given Jazz a new meaning, will judge and think about the artistic value of Swing in the conclusion.
