Britain began to rule Cyprus in 1878,and a series of problems followed. In order to continue its rule in Cyprus,Britain began to seek the help of its ally,Turkey.Turkey's intervention in Cyprus turned the issue into an international issue that has remained unresolved ever since it became independent but eventually split. The emergence of the Cyprus issue cannot be separated from the intervention of Turkey and Britain. This dissertation is to study the interaction between Turkey and Britain under the Cyprus issue,so as to analyze the influence of the interaction and intervention of major powers. The dissertation consists of four parts:introduction, body, conclusion and references. The body part is divided into four chapters;each chapter is divided into different sections. The first chapter is mainly about the interaction between Turkey and Britain concerning Cyprus before the 1950s,which lays the background of the interaction. In 1878,the Ottoman empire gave Cyprus to the British in return for Britain's help in the Russo-Turkish war.In the early 20th century, due to the First World War and other reasons,Turkey and Britain signed the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923,and Turkey formally gave up all rights in Cyprus. At the same time, the enosis influences the Greek Cypriots. In 1931,a rebellion broke out all over the island to prosper enosis. The uprising ended up in failure, but the pursuit of enosis never ended.During the Second World War and after,Turkish Cypriots became uneasy about the growing enthusiasm towards the enosis,so they began to speak out to Turkey, which drew the attention of the Turkish government to Cyprus. The second chapter is mainly about the cooperation and interaction between Turkey and Britain on the Cyprus issue during the 1950s.In the early 1950s,the enosis referendum and the Greek submission of the Cyprus proposal to UN internationalized the Cyprus problem. In the mid-1950s,an armed movement broke out in Cyprus to overthrow British colonists. In the face of international and internal pressure in Cyprus,Britain began to seek cooperation with its ally Turkey on Cyprus issue and called a trilateral meeting. The meeting led to Turkey's formal involvement in the Cyprus issue, the cooperation between Turkey and Britain in the Cyprus issue in the 1950s and the tragic fate of Cyprus under the intervention of major powers. The third chapter is mainly about the interaction and counter-measures between Turkey and Britain in the two crises in Cyprus in the 1960s.Cyprus gained independence in 1960 with guarantees from Britain,Turkey and Greece. In 1964,however,the conflict between the two ethnic communities in Cyprus broke out,and a war broke out between the Turkey and Greece, who had different interests in Cyprus.Under the mediation of the United Nations,Britain and the United States, the crisis was held back. However, after a lapse of three years, the Cyprus crisis broke out again in 1967.Turkey and Britain expressed their respective positions and countermeasures on the crisis in Cyprus at that time.At the same time, the crisis was resolved without further escalating into a war between great powers under the prevention of the United Nations,Britain and the United States. The fourth chapter is mainly about the interaction between Turkey and Britain and their respective attitudes in the Cyprus crisis of 1974,as well as the divergence between Britain and Turkey after the crisis. In 1974,the Greek military government staged a coup in Cyprus.Turkey's unilateral military invasion of Cyprus followed Britain's refusal to intervene militarily.Turkish-British cooperation over Cyprus issue thus broke down.In 1975,the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus was established and the Republic of Cyprus existed only in name.In 1983,the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established, which completely separated the Republic of Cyprus. As a result, relations between Turkey and Britain fell sharply to confrontation.
