Sam Buss Warner,Jr.,born in 1928,is an American urban historian and former president of the American Urban History Association.Warner has made great contributions to the richness of urban research theories in the United States.His variable theory and the concept of inner city and outer city provided new perspectives and ideas for the development and theoretical update of urban history research in the United States.This paper is divided into three parts: introduction,text and conclusion.The introduction part mainly introduces the origin of the topic,research significance and research status at China and abroad.The main body mainly introduces the relationship between Warner and the study of American urban history,the content of the study of urban history,the main research theory,characteristics and shortcomings.In the first chapter,it mainly sorts out Warner's study experience,his main academic works and his research status before and after his involvement in the field of American urban history.The second chapter mainly introduces the main content of Warner's urban history research.Warner's research has been focused on American cities,and his research has been divided into two types: regional studies of specific cities,and general studies of the overall development of American cities.The third chapter is a summary of Warner's research theory.In this part,I summarizes it into three aspects,namely "variable theory","macro model and urban system" and "individualism",and I analyzes the practical application of these three theories in Warner's works and their impact on the institute of urban history of the same period.The fourth chapter mainly analyzes the characteristics and shortcomings of Warner's urban history research.The most important characteristic of Warner's urban history research is to introduce a large amount of data and information and to actively carry out interdisciplinary research out of the constraints of disciplines,which is also closely related to his work experience.
