Trilateral cooperation is rising as a new trend in the international development cooperation system. With the deepening reform of China's foreign aid institutions,China has paid increasingly more attention to building a more equal and balanced global development partnership with bilateral and multilateral donors through trilateral cooperation. This paper comprehensively explores the relevant history and analyzes two key cases, aiming to explore the attitude and motivation of the Chinese government with regard to participating in trilateral cooperation,so as to provide a new perspective for the study of China's foreign policy and international influence. This paper is mainly divided into three parts.Firstly, touching upon the status quo of trilateral cooperation, this paper summarizes its connotation and types, identifies three main periods in the development history of China's trilateral cooperation: the initial stage(1971-1994),the turning stage(1995-2012)and the rapid development stage(2013 to now).Secondly, the paper focuses on two trilateral cooperation cases regarding African Agriculture: China-UK-Africa Agricultural Technology Transfer project and China-FAO-Africa South-South Cooperation Trust Fund project, showing the interaction of China's active involvement in building trilateral cooperative partnerships. Finally,on the basis of the first two parts, the paper summarizes the reasons for China's increasing engagement in trilateral cooperation, focusing on the international and domestic levels. The pressure from the transformation of the international development cooperation system and the need for mutual coordination among diversified development partners have promoted China to actively shape the trilateral cooperation agenda;and China's perceptions of its strategic interests and global image, its national identity based on South-South cooperation, and the coordination challenge of China's internal mechanisms of foreign aid are the three endogenous factors behind.
