Small State Vulnerability Analysis

The constant flow of immigration reflects the fragility of the three small Central American countries,Guatemala,El Salvador and Honduras.The inability to meet the living and security needs of the people internally and to resist external fluctuations and shocks constitutes the main source of fragility in the three countries.This paper follows the logical sequence from universality to particularity,starting from the definition of country and small country,and discriminates between the two interrelated but distinct concepts of state fragility and small state vulnerability.Then combined with the development model of small countries with better performance in the world,it briefly summarized two methods for small countries to overcome vulnerabilities.In the case study,based on the status of a small country in the "Northern Triangle" country,combined with the historical background and geographic environment of the Central American region,then sorted out its fragility performance in the five dimensions of security,economy,politics,society,and the environment.From the perspective of history,perspective of economy,perspective of population and socio-economic,the perspective of national system construction,and the perspective of interaction with the international community and other non-traditional actors,the reasons for the fragility of the three countries are analyzed.The author concludes that the history of colonial rule and the single economic structure have made the "North Triangle" countries' level of development long-term among the lowest in the Western Hemisphere,and the role of social demographics,ruling elites,and the international community have made the them more vulnerable than other countries in the same region.Finally,this paper also discusses the efforts made by the "North Triangle" countries to alleviate their fragilities,and makes preliminary judgments on the future direction of their development.
