Geometry teaching can help students develop geometric literacy in their learning. The eighth-grade students of junior high school have begun to learn geometry. How to make these students learn geometry effectively and improve their geometric thinking level is an important object that junior high school mathematics teachers pay attention to.This article focuses on the teaching of geometry in the eighth grade, and helps math teachers to explore the teaching methods of geometry in the classroom,so as to improve the geometric thinking of the eighth grade students learning, and it is of practical significance to apply this theory to teaching practice. This research mainly adopts literature research method, experimental research method, and testing method.By combing the research literature on geometry teaching, constructing a theoretical foundation, and raising research questions: What is the current situation of the eighth grade students' geometric thinking level? How to apply Van Hill theory to guide the teaching of eighth grade geometry content? Does the geometry teaching based on Van Hill theory help to improve students' geometric thinking level? The geometric thinking level test paper was compiled, and its reliability and validity were tested.Four classes of the eighth grade of a middle school in Hefei were selected as the survey objects to investigate the current situation of the eighth grade students' geometric thinking level. The teaching plan was designed according to Van Hill theory, and two classes were selected as the experimental class and the control class for the geometry teaching experiment.Through data comparison and analysis,it was concluded that the students who reached level 1(visual level)accounted for The ratio was 21.2%,20.7% of students reached level 2(analytical level),41.9% of students reached level 3(informal interpretation level),and 41.9% of students reached level 4(formal interpretation level)11.6%,and 4.5% of students who reached level 5(rigority level);the application of Van Hill's theory has a positive impact on geometry teaching and the improvement of the eighth-grade students' geometric thinking level.Based before teaching, teachers should fully understand the students' geometric thinking level. In the teaching process, they should first adopt targeted teaching strategies, rationally use geometric language, infiltrate the idea of combining numbers and shapes, and secondly pay attention to the generation process of geometric knowledge. To enhance students' autonomous learning ability, they must finally put theory into practice, combining teaching and life.
