The geometry part of junior high school focuses on the study of plane geometry,which is not only a further expansion of the initial understanding of geometric figures at the primary school level,but also the basis for the learning of three-dimensional geometry at the high school level.The eighth grade is a period of rapid development of students' geometric intuition and logical reasoning ability,and teachers should seize the critical period of students' geometric thinking development to improve students' geometric thinking level.Van Hill theory is one of the most widely used theories for the study of students' geometric thinking level,and many scholars have demonstrated that the "geometric thinking level theory" and "geometry teaching stage theory" are of great help to geometry teaching.This paper first introduces the development and core theory of Van Hill's theory,on the basis of combing the research of scholars at home and abroad,the test paper and questionnaire survey are used to test the geometric thinking level of students,and the SPSS software is used to analyze the collected data.The results of the study are as follows: 17.4% of the students have a geometric thinking level below level 2-the analytical level,57.1% of the students have reached the level of geometric thinking level 3-non-formal deduction level,only 20.8% of the students have reached the Van Hill geometric thinking level 4-formal deduction level,and 4.3% of the students have jumped.Finally,combined with the results of the test paper and the questionnaire,a teaching strategy to improve the geometric thinking level of students is proposed.Taking the first lesson of "Isosceles Triangle" as an example,the teaching design is based on The Teaching Theory of Van Hill's Geometry Stage,in order to help eighth grade students teach geometry.
