In today’s curriculum reform in full swing, the cultivation of students’ core literacy has become an important task of teaching. If students are a puzzle to be completed, then the subject literacy cultivated by students from different disciplines constitutes an important part of the puzzle, and physics is no exception.Scientific reasoning,an important part of the core accomplishment of physics,is particularly important at this time. This paper investigates and studies the level of scientific reasoning of middle school students in physical and non-physical situations and the thinking process behind it.This research has done the following work: firstly, the connotation of scientific reasoning is summarized, and the types and evaluation criteria of scientific reasoning ability are discussed in detail. Then, with the help of front-line teachers, appropriate test papers are developed.A total of 165 middle school students at the age of 15 who were in grade one in Zhejiang and Shanghai were tested by this test paper. The data analysis part includes the classification analysis of physical and non-physical situations. This paper mainly studies the differences and similarities between middle school students’ scientific reasoning ability in physical and non-physical situations. The results show that:1.Middle school students perform better in the scientific reasoning in the physical context than in the non-physical context. In addition, they perform better in the three reasoning types of conservation, control variable and proportion, but do not perform well in the two reasoning types of relevance and hypothesis deduction.2.The thinking difference of middle school students in reasoning is mainly reflected in whether they understand the knowledge and ability investigated by the topic;Whether students rely on the relevant knowledge they have mastered, and whether their mastery of this part of knowledge is solid; The degree of rigor in students’ thinking; Can students use their physics knowledge successfully in new situations or not.
