Hua Luogeng once said,"The number is less intuitive when the shape is missing,and it is difficult to get into the subtleties when the shape is few;the combination of the number and the shape is good in a hundred ways,but everything is restless when it is divided." This highlights the dialectical relationship between "number" and "form" from the side.With the promulgation of the new curriculum,more and more emphasis has been placed on the flexible use of mathematical thinking at primary level,and the combination of number and shape is a subtle way of analysing and dealing with problems through the perfect integration of abstract algebra and figurative geometry.Number and algebra and geometric shapes are key components of mathematics teaching materials at primary level.As primary school students have not yet formed a complete chain of basic mathematical knowledge and are interested in objects,illustrations,characters and colours in life and in textbooks,the use of patterns,marks and drawings that are easily accepted by primary school students to form relatively intuitive 'shapes' and 'numbers' can be a good way of teaching them.and 'numbers',which helps them to grasp the basics of mathematics quickly.The combination of number and shape is an approach that seeks to simplify the complexities of mathematical subject knowledge and to balance figurative and abstract thinking in order to demonstrate its most substantive features,which is why it has become a key and common mode of teaching and learning in the primary school mathematics classroom.The integration of number and shape in the primary mathematics classroom allows for more visual definitions,more concrete mathematical models,more in-depth understanding of algorithms,and easier and more flexible problem solving.The flexible use of number and shape can enhance the interest of the primary school mathematics classroom and make it more motivating and active for primary school students to learn.Based on the above context,the paper concentrates on the application strategy of symbolic-graphic combination in the mathematics teaching for Grade Five,and adopts the literature research method,text analysis method and case analysis method to explore the application status and strategies of symbolic-graphic combination in the mathematics teaching for Grade Five.The current research is composed of five parts.The first part is the introduction,which mainly illustrates the research background,research ideas,research significance and research methods.The second part expounds the problems related to symbolic-graphic combination,including the definition of concepts in the current research,the theoretical foundation of symbolic-graphic combination,and the application principle of symbolic-graphic combination in primary mathematics teaching.This part provides theoretical support for the following writing.The third part analyzes the application principle of symbolic-graphic combination in primary mathematics teaching and the educational value of symbolic-graphic combination.The fourth part introduces the application status of symbolic-graphic combination in the mathematics teaching for Grade Five,analyzes the application of“assisting number with graphic”,“using number to solve graphic”,and “the combination of number and graphic” in textbook and classroom,and points out the problems existing in their application in classroom teaching.According to these application problems in teaching,the fifth part proposes that by subtly using “assisting number with graphic”,“using number to solve graphic”,and “the combination of number and graphic”,the connotation of number can be perceived with basic graphics.Meanwhile,multiple application strategies have been put forward,such as solving abstract problems with objects and line segments,understanding theory of computing with the area model,introducing numerical characteristics into the model concept,subtly mastering graphic relations by formulas,discerning size of graphic with operation,constructing images to examine the relation between number and graphic,using number pairs to teach the idea of function,and perceiving number through changes in graphic.The research aims to make full use of the advantages of symbolic-graphic combination in teaching practice,arouse students' curiosity about mathematics learning,help students shape mathematical thinking and widen their way to solve problems in combination with the specific conditions in mathematics class teaching.
