Handheld technology is an analytical tool recommended for precise quantification in the exploration and practice section in textbooks that are currently in wide use.It is a digital experimenting system consisting of sensors to detect biomass,a data collector to convert biomass into digital signals for transmission to a computer, and computer software to draw experimental curves in a real-time,straightforward manner with easy portability.Literature and case studies show that there is an overdue number of theoretical studies on experimental teaching of the subject biology and amount of attention paid to classroom presentation and a lack of hands-on operations by the students, resulting in an in adequacy of research on the experimental teaching process of students as the actors operating with handheld devices. Therefore, guided by constructivism, information processing,POE teaching model and other related theories, this study conducted an action research using survey method and action research method on the application of handheld technology in biology laboratory teaching.Students in the second year of senior high school in the Affiliated Middle School of Yunnan Normal University served as actors. It is carried out through cooperative learning in the form of optional course, with the aim that the teaching of quantification and analysis experiments in five exploration and practice sections in the first compulsory textbook published by People's Education Press should be accomplished. The results of the study make revelations about the following improvements in the students' biology study in the process of the experimental teaching: The deep understanding and organic combination of knowledge and practice is realized by the students' in-depth analysis of experimental curve images;the students' ability to solve a broad range of practical problems have been strengthened;the students' ability to conduct experimental investigation has been significantly boosted and the goal of cultivating basic literacy in biology in them achieved by the independently designed quantitative experimental plan;the students' participation in laboratory classes has been encouraged and their enthusiasm for biology stimulated as well.In addition, this study can also serve as a case study of experimental teaching based on handheld technology and provide an viable reference basis for teachers to implement a student-oriented experimental teaching scheme using handheld technology.
