Research On Cultural Identity Of Chinese College Students In Thailand

After the World War II,there is great change in the world of Chinese and overseas Chinese in Thailand,which transits from overseas-Chinese society to Chinese society.Due to the newborn Chinese population are born in residence country,namely Thailand,they have received local cultures since their childhood,which causes that there are huge disparities of awareness and culture between the young generation and the old generation.Thailand has about 67 million population while there are 14%Chinese people in it,nearly 9.3 million,which shows that Chinese people play a crucial role in Thailand.As the representative of newborn Chinese population,the university students of Thailand-Chinese are the new emerging forces of the future Chinese.As to them,whose language and behavior gradually diverge from their parent,their thoughts and ideas have changed greatly as the transitions of social history and the influence of political factors from the residence country.In the view of cultural identity,this paper will analyze the thoughts from overseas Chinese university students of Huachiew Chalermprakiet University on the identification problems about Thai local culture,Chinese traditional culture and the contemporary Chinese culture in new era.Next,it will find that this generation of overseas Chinese university students are really complicated and multi-layered.They are influenced by Thai culture more than their old generation.Though they recognize Chinese traditional culture in a high degree,their acceptance levels are pretty low.They may be impressed by the original country's culture as the developing of China's economy and its degree of modernizing,but they will also meet lots of barriers and misunderstandings because there are bad public morals in the process of China's economy development.Moreover,it could not ignore the promoting action from new media,especially in the aspects of cultural identity.Based on these conditions,this paper introduces strategies for establishing cultural identity to overseas Chinese university students in Thailand as follows: improving and promoting the Chinese language and culture education;exploring the new model of education cooperation between China and Thailand;strengthening the construction of values in the cultural identity;and broadening the spreading ways of Chinese culture.I hope that such a thesis could provide references and ideas to carry out united front work of overseas Chinese affairs in new period and to set up “identification of public mind” between China and Thailand.
