| There are two opposite cultures in today’s society, one is humanistic culture and the other is scientific culture. The division and confrontation between the two cultures have led to the growing polarization of the whole society. The two groups lack understanding of each other and even form antipathy and hostility. The relationship between science and humanity has increasingly become the focus of people’s attention. On the relationship between scientific culture and humanistic culture, the "Three Cultures" theory of Jerome Kagan,a famous American psychologist, provides us with some new thoughts. After rethinking Snow’s proposition,Kagan put forward the view of "three cultures",namely, natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.People can see in Kagan’s theory of "Three Cultures" that he is undoubtedly influenced by the linguistic turn of modern philosophy. In addition,Kuhn’s scientific revolution thought and Feyerabend’s pluralism thought also had an important influence on it.Kagan further explored the relationship between natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, and analyzed the theoretical basis for the evolution of "two cultures" into "three cultures" by discussing the different meanings of "three cultures" in terms of concepts, principles, tools of the mind, the use of words and their respective contributions. At the same time,Kagan systematically analyzed the characteristics of the three cultures, fully reflected on the three cultural communities, and clearly positioned the functions of the three cultural communities: each of the three cultural communities has its own social functions. So Kagan calls for respect for the differences between the three cultures on the one hand, and critical thinking about that difference on the other.Different worldviews and methodologies are needed to thoroughly understand an event, and collaboration among scholars of the three cultures is also important.Kagan’s analysis of the three cultures made us re-examine science and humanity, and on this basis proposed and demonstrated the characteristics and essence of social science, which is a breakthrough to the traditional view of culture. At the same time,Kagan emphasized the cooperation between the three cultural communities, which played a positive role in promoting the integration of scientific culture and humanistic culture. |
