| The Arctic region was formerly on the periphery of global politics, but due to its crucial strategic location and strong economic,military-strategic,and transit potentials,it is now one of the key targets of increased attention from international actors. For a long time,it was nearly impossible to develop the Arctic region industrially. However, rapid global warming created new opportunities for exploration of the Far North and sparked an“Arctic fever,” which intensified the claims of major powers for dominance in this area of the planet. Therefore, the major goal of this paper is to comprehensively analyze the role of the Arctic in modern geopolitics and the foreign policy of the People’s Republic of China and the United States.Previous studies have shown that the enormous natural wealth, potential colossal energy reserves,as well as transit opportunities make control over the circumpolar zone a geopolitical priority for many countries of the modern world. In order to strengthen their positions both at the regional and global levels,to effectively adapt to new international challenges and to fully realize their national interests, the Arctic countries and states that do not have a direct geographical connection with the Arctic began to form their own Arctic strategies and join the so-called “Arctic chess game”.The present study was conducted with the use of a significant number of primary sources, including research studies, think tank reports, various international articles and the involvement of scientific and reference literature, which made it possible to systematically examine the strategies of the PRC and the United States and foreign factors of state policy regarding the Arctic in the context of modern global processes and phenomena. Therefore, with the help of comparative analysis, the international dimension of the Arctic issue is investigated and the participation of both regional actors was considered.Present research indicates that the political goal of China in the Arctic is to protect, develop and participate in the management of the Arctic in order to guarantee compliance with the common interests of all countries and the international community in the Arctic, moreover the promotion of sustainable development of the Arctic region. From the results,it is concluded that the foreign strategies considered in the work actually lead to the existence of a significant “window of opportunity” for both China and the United States and the achievement of mutually beneficial cooperation of all countries of the world on the Arctic issue.Because the activity and presence of the USA and China in the Arctic will continue to grow steadily in the near future, the Arctic vector of the foreign policy activities of both countries will only intensify. |
