Since ancient times, natural disasters have been an important factor affecting our socio-economic development. The Song Dynasty was a historical period with frequent and high incidence of natural disasters, and the Song Dynasty of Emperor Renzong was one of the most frequent periods of calamity.Historical records show that disasters were frequent, numerous and varied during the reign of King Renzong, and that peasant uprisings were caused by disasters, which greatly affected the economic development and social stability of the time.At the same time, party disputes were prevalent during this period, with the reformist and conservative arguments arising from the Qingli reforms and the dispute over the management of the Yellow River, which had a negative impact on disaster relief. However, the reasons for the relatively rapid social and economic development, cultural prosperity and technological progress at the time were not only due to the inspirational rule of Emperor Renzong, but also to the diverse and informative system of wilderness government at the time, which had a positive effect on combating natural disasters, mitigating losses, easing conflicts and restoring production.Learning from the disaster responses of our predecessors can still provide effective historical lessons and experiences for disaster prevention and relief work today. While there have been many studies on natural disasters in the Song dynasty from various perspectives, there is a lack of phased research and no master’s thesis on natural disasters in the Renzong dynasty. This paper therefore builds on the research of previous scholars, collects and organises materials extensively, and analyses natural disasters during the reign of King Renzong using documentary, historical comparison and graphical methods,as follows:In the introductory section, the origins and significance of the study are explained, the research results of the academic community on the relevant issues are sorted out, relevant concepts are defined, and the research methodology is explained.Chapter 1 Natural Disasters in the Song Renzong Dynasty. This chapter collects and collates a large number of records of disasters during the reign of Emperor Song Renzong, counts the number of natural disasters, analyses the characteristics of the temporal and spatial distribution of various types of disasters, and examines the causes of the high incidence of natural disasters during the reign of Emperor Song Renzong from the perspectives of natural and human factors,in order to set the stage for the following study. The second chapter looks at the drought regime during the reign of Emperor Song.It introduces the relief measures of both the central government and the local governments. On the central government side, the measures involved both formal relief and actual disaster relief, both of which worked in tandem;on the local government side, they included three aspects: pre-disaster prevention, relief during disasters, and post-disaster recovery and reconstruction. While acknowledging the effectiveness of disaster relief,it also analyses the limitations of some relief initiatives.Chapter 3 provides an overview of party disputes and disaster relief during the reign of Song Renzong. This chapter provides an overview of party disputes during the reign of Emperor Song Renzong, discusses the relationship between party disputes and disaster relief, and analyses the differences between the various parties in response to natural disasters and the impact this had on government relief.Chapter 4 examines the impact of natural disasters during the reign of Song Renzong. This chapter focuses on the impact of natural disasters on the agrarian economy, politics, the military, medicine and the psychology of the people during the reign of King Renzong. The text is summarised on the basis of the previous discussion.Although natural disasters were frequent during the reign of King Renzong, and there were some shortcomings in the central and local responses, overall, the strategy of disaster management achieved some success in reducing the burden of the victims and minimising potential social conflicts during the disaster years, thus maintaining overall social stability.
