Building inclusive,safe and sustainable road transport systems is essential for the well-being and health of people’ s lives.Human participation in road traffic operation is an indispensable part of daily life.However,the death,injury and economic loss caused by road traffic accidents are one of the serious threats facing the current development path.At present,the research on road traffic safety generally aims at the specific research direction,and few scholars systematically analyze the current research status related to road traffic safety,which brings difficulties for scholars to fully understand the field of road traffic safety research to a certain extent.Therefore,in order to understand the current situation and development trend of road traffic safety research at home and abroad more clearly,through the experience accumulated in the previous research,and from the perspective of bibliometrics,this paper carries out a comprehensive analysis on the road traffic safety research through the co-occurrence of knowledge elements,analyzes the evolution of the road traffic safety research,and explores the research frontier and development trend,which has important significance.Sample data were selected from 8,028 records in the Web of Science Core Collection and 4,458 records in the CNKI database related to road traffic safety studies.It is analyzed from multiple perspectives such as text distribution,knowledge carrier and theme co-occurrence.The following conclusions can be drawn through analysis:(1)In terms of time dimension,the domestic and foreign research on road traffic safety is divided into three stages.Currently,it is in a stable development stage,and the research popularity remains at a high level.China and the United States led the world in terms of the number of articles published and international cooperation,while the other countries with relatively high number of articles were Canada,Australia and the United Kingdom.Transportation Science Technology,Engineering Civil,Public Environmental Occupational Health and Construction Building Technology are the key disciplines of carrying road traffic safety research.(2)At present,the research and observation perspectives of most journals involving traffic safety and the clusters formed by them are: the perspective of traffic accident analysis and prevention,the perspective of transportation process management,and the perspective of improving the safety performance of transportation system by engineering technology.The similarity of subject classification between published journals and cited journals in the field of road traffic safety is high.IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology is high-quality journal in the field with certain authority.The core literature and high co-citation reflect two important research bases: traffic accident analysis and prevention,and improvement of safety performance of transportation system by engineering technology.(3)Through the co-authorship analysis,it is found that no clear group or research direction has been formed for the authors with high international articles.The research content of the group formed by domestic scholars is roughly divided into six aspects:driver behavior safety,highway traffic accident research,urban traffic highway analysis and evaluation,road traffic theory and simulation research,road traffic obstacle analysis and evaluation,and public traffic safety research.Moreover,according to the author’s data with high volume of articles,it is found that Chinese scholars have made important contributions in the field.On the whole,the coincidence rate of highfrequency keywords in Chinese and English is relatively high,but the two have different focuses.The focus of Chinese keywords is on improving the road traffic system,with the larger one considered the smaller one.However,English key words mainly focus on the driver’s behavior and computer simulation analysis,with specific concerns.(4)International scholars in the field of road traffic safety research can be divided into six directions,respectively is the driver behavior safety,traffic accident analysis and treatment,automatic driving vehicles,road junction safety,shallow driver and pedestrian safety,the first three are hot spots.Domestic scholars in the field of road traffic safety is divided into four research direction,respectively is the traffic law and regulations,road traffic safety education and regulation(driver behavior),road traffic safety evaluation(traffic accident analysis and handling)and road traffic construction technology,are hot research.It can be seen that driver behavior and traffic accident analysis and treatment are currently the hot spots in the global academic community.(5)Model predictive control,traffic engineering calculation,high-level adaptive cruise control system,high-precision on-board sensors and the development and application of Internet vehicles are the current international research frontier.Highway design and road traffic construction technology related research is the current domestic academic research frontier.
