| Transportation effectively promotes economic and cultural exchange and development between countries.Maritime container transportation has many advantages, including reducing cargo loss and transportation costs, speeding up vessel turnover, and simplifying packaging. From 2019 to 2021,the container throughput of Xiamen Port and Singapore Port ranked among the top 14 and top 2 in the world for three consecutive years. In the face of the stable development of the container shipping trade between the two ports and the trend of upsizing container ships, the transportation security between the two ports has become a hot issue of concern in the industry.Container ocean transportation faces a variety of safety challenges.Because of the high value of container ships and their cargo, the cost of accidents is significant. Therefore, ensuring the safety of personnel, ships, and cargo has become a very important aspect of container sea transportation.Domestic and foreign studies have conducted single-item analyses of and proposed countermeasures for hazardous goods containers or container transportation safety or navigational safety. To date,no study has systematically analyzed container transportation safety on the Xiamen to Singapore ocean route and proposed countermeasures. This study adopts a risk assessment model based on catastrophe theory to evaluate the safety of container transportation on the ocean route from Xiamen to Singapore. After a comprehensive analysis of the navigation situation, natural conditions, meteorological environment and recent accident risks published by local authoritative departments of the two ports, the risk factors for transportation on this route are identified, and a container transportation safety evaluation index system is established for the route.By examining the five primary indicators(including human factors, ship factors, management factors, cargo environment, and environmental factors)and sixteen second-level indicators that affect the safety of this shipping route using real-world ship transport management experience and expert evaluation, modeling of the safety evaluation model, and other methods, the study ranked the factors affecting container transport safety on the route. The findings indicate that natural environment, cargo stacking and isolation, ship factors, and the physical and chemical properties of cargo are key factors that impact the safety of container shipping on the route.Ship supervision, cargo packaging quality, social environment, ship structural strength, and ship equipment condition are considered relatively important factors, while the remaining seven factors are deemed generally important. This study provides specific recommendations aimed at reducing the risk of accidents on the route. The assessment conclusion supports the use of catastrophe theory, combined with factor analysis,in evaluating the safety of container transport on this route,as it reduces the influence of subjective human factors and is computationally straightforward. This research methodology can be applied to other shipping routes and ship types, serving as a reference for similar studies. |
