A Study On The Decorative Art And Cultural Connotation Of Architectural Components In Shanxi Merchant Courtyards

Shanxi is one of the birthplaces of the Chinese nation and has a deep cultural heritage and historical origins.If the traditional dwellings of Shanxi are the living fossils of ancient China,then Shanxi Merchant courtyard are the ’narrators’ of the region’s culture.The Li family compound in Yanjing Village,Wanrong County,Yuncheng City,southern Shanxi,is the best preserved group of the merchant houses in the southern region of the country.Therefore,this study takes the decorative art of the Li family compound as a base,and attempts to explore the architectural decoration culture and the cultural implications behind the decoration of traditional houses in the southern region of Jin during the Qing Dynasty.This paper takes as its object of study the decorative art of functional architectural elements in the less damaged ancient courtyard buildings of the Li family compound,which have been restored by the relevant heritage departments and opened to the public.Using architecture as the basis of research and integrating other disciplines such as economics,physical geography,humanities and history,social and cultural studies,psychology,aesthetics and art,this paper uses a comprehensive vision and scientific research methods to explore in depth the decorative art of the stone,wood and brick carvings of the Li family courtyard from various dimensions,including the factors of courtyard formation,spatial layout,value structure,historical tracing,artistic characteristics,religious thought and cultural implications.The decorative art of the Li family compound based on stone,wood and brick carvings.This paper provides a detailed classification of the architectural elements of the Li family compound,draws some of the compound drawings,provides a complete summary and collation of the decorative patterns of the architectural elements,and provides a detailed analysis of the patterns on the architectural elements.The author believes that the decorative art of the architectural elements of the Li courtyard is the result of the subjective consciousness of the occupants,the historical heritage,the aesthetics of the times,the religious beliefs and the joint choice of regional culture.It is hoped that this paper will support the diverse heritage and conservation of Shanxi Merchant courtyard and the continuation of the traditional residential culture of southern Shanxi province.There are 86 figures,19 tables and 70 references.
