Under the influence of rapid urbanization, the urban texture and regional culture of many historic urban areas have suffered varying degrees of destruction. In view of many problems in the current conservation of historic urban areas,UNESCO adopted The Recommendation on the Urban Historical Landscape in 2011.The Historic Urban Landscape emphasizes the "association" within the historical landscape and the "stratification" in the historical development.,providing a new theory and approach for sustainable heritage management.Guangzhou Xiguan,a typical historical urban area with a history of over a thousand years, has suffered from the erosion of the traditional urban texture and the gradual decline of the landscape of Lingnan water town due to the development mode of large-scale demolition and construction in the past. Therefore, from the perspective of Urban Historical Landscape, according to its core concepts of "association" and "stratification",this paper analyzes the landscape evolution and development law of Xiguan,in order to explore more sustainable protection and renewal methods.First of all, this paper studies the relevant theoretical basis.By combing the development trend of international historical city protection,it is concluded that the connotation and advantages of Urban Historical Landscape as a new paradigm of protection,so as to extract the inspiration of its core concepts "association" and "stratification" for landscape evolution research, and expounds the significance of landscape evolution research to historical city protection system. Then, based on theoretical research, this paper constructs a landscape evolution research method of "landscape feature cognition-stratified evolution analysis-landscape evolution law summary-protection and renewal strategy research".Then, based on the construction of landscape evolution method, this paper takes Xiguan of Guangzhou as an example, analyzes the landscape evolution by relying on a large number of historical evidences, and extracts the evolution law, which is summarized as structural landscape, characteristic landscape and general landscape. Finally, according to the evolution law, this paper puts forward the protection and renewal principles of structural landscape integrity and authenticity, characteristic landscape continuation and inheritance, general landscape development and deduction. It also summarizes a conservation and renewal strategy, including the protection and restoration of the natural pattern of "Lingnan Water Town" in Xiguan, the overall continuation of the "high-density traditional commercial and residential" town pattern and the "free checkerboard type" street pattern, and the development and interpretation of the "inclusive" architectural order, and then discuss it based on practical cases. In summary, this paper explores the landscape evolution system approach from the "association" and "stratification",with the help of Historic Urban Landscape.Combined with empirical research,it puts forward the conservation and renewal strategies of Guangzhou Xiguan in accordance with the context of international heritage conservation. It is hope to achieve the goal of conserving and continuing urban heritages and regional cultures in Xiguan and provide some new ideas and concrete practical thinking for the conservation and development of China’s historic urban areas.
