With the update and development of higher education concepts,the places for college students to learn and communicate are no longer limited to classrooms,but have expanded to the entire campus.Other spaces outside the classroom of the teaching building have the function of cultivating students’ creative thinking and extending the learning process.Grey space is such a versatile and highly creative space that exists in various environments with rich postures,providing teaching activities The space and venue for teacher-student interaction can promote the cultivation of students’ innovative abilities.Based on the above background and significance,the paper takes the "gray space" of teaching buildings in vocational colleges that have been newly built in three vocational education cities in Qingzhen,Guizhou in recent years and have representative architectural forms as the research object.The research adopts literature research,field research,and statistical analysis methods to analyze the communication function of gray space in teaching buildings in vocational colleges and the characteristics of students’ communication behavior in gray space.The research results show that:(1)The gray space of teaching buildings in vocational colleges mainly includes: external corridor space,corridor space,terrace space,ground floor overhead space,staircase and inner courtyard space,among which the frequency of communication between terrace,external corridor,and corridor is relatively high.(2)The communication behaviors that occur in the gray space of teaching buildings in vocational colleges mainly include conversations between teachers and students,viewing display displays,leisure and entertainment activities,and auditory and visual communication behaviors.(3)The types of social activities that occur include necessary activities,spontaneous activities,and "chain like" activities.The scale and hierarchy of social activities that occur include individual level,small group level,and group level.(4)The communication behavior of vocational college students in the gray space of teaching buildings has characteristics such as proximity and small group communication;When choosing a space for communication,pay attention to the reliability and visibility of the environment.(5)Guizhou Construction Vocational and Technical College effectively utilizes terraces,corridors,and external corridors to provide a good view of each space.It also designs the landscape of the gray space and segments it in the architectural structure.These details have a certain promoting effect on the communication function of the gray space,making it more advantageous in communication performance compared to indoor space.Compared to the other two schools with a single design,the communication function of constructing gray spaces in vocational colleges is significantly better than the other two schools.(6)The grey space evaluation index system for teaching buildings in vocational colleges has four dimensions: physical environment,supporting facilities,and psychological needs for spatial cognition.There is a significant positive relationship between the four dimensions.(7)Based on the research results,the design principles of student-centered,adaptable to the environment,artistic,vibrant,and multifunctional were proposed;Proposed design strategies for the gray space of teaching buildings in vocational colleges at the physical and psychological levels.(8)Suggestions for optimizing the teaching buildings of three vocational colleges were proposed for important gray spaces such as terraces,verandahs,corridors,ground level overhead spaces,inner courtyards,and staircases.Simultaneously select terraces,verandahs,and corridors with general requirements and high representativeness for case practice design based on optimization strategies.The research results can provide reference and reference for the design of gray space in teaching buildings of vocational colleges in the future.
