In recent years,China began to increase the protection and inheritance of ancient towns from the institutional level, and the protection and promotion of the value of the historical and cultural public space of ancient towns has received widespread attention.Ancient town public space as an important part of the ancient town,is the carrier of ancient town history and culture,it is not only purely material space, but carries a deep historical and cultural values of the cultural space.Under the background of cultural tourism integration, the competition among ancient towns is becoming increasingly hot,and the original cultural characteristics are gradually lost in the pursuit of commercialization, resulting in the situation of "a thousand towns with one side",a convergence of ancient town landscapes and a lack of culture, which also leads to a homogenization of the perception of the cultural characteristics of the public space by tourists during the tour. This also leads to a homogenization of tourists’ perception of the cultural characteristics of public spaces during their visit. Therefore,it is urgent to protect and optimize the public space of the ancient town from the perspective of tourists’ perception. As a national historical and cultural town in Chongqing, the ancient town of Pianyan has an outstanding landscape and geographical environment, and as a representative of the ancient towns in Yuzhong,it has attracted a large number of tourists with its original cultural landscape and cultural connotation of public space in recent tourism development. Therefore,it is of considerable importance to optimize and enhance the public space of Pianyan Ancient Town. This thesis analyzes and summarizes the layers and components of the public space of the ancient town according to the characteristics of the space, analyzes the history of the ancient town and the types of culture it contains, and identifies the cultural characteristics of the public space of the ancient town.At the same time, under the perspective of tourists’ perception,we clarify the process and content of tourists’ perception of the cultural characteristics of the public space of the ancient town, and use social media data and questionnaires to investigate and analyze the macroscopic-overall atmosphere,mesoscopic-spatial environment and microscopic-cultural symbols of the public space of the ancient town. The three levels of perceived cultural characteristics are evaluated. Finally,we compare and analyze the actual cultural characteristics of the public spaces in the ancient town of Pianyan with the cultural perceptions of tourists, explore the characteristics and reasons for the differences in perceptions, and propose corresponding strategies for optimizing and improving the public spaces.First of all, this thesis summarizes the cultural characteristics of the public space of the ancient town of Pianyan at three levels: macroscopic-overall atmosphere,mesoscopic-spatial environment, and microscopic-cultural symbols, among which the macroscopic level mainly focuses on four aspects: ancient town atmosphere, landscape pattern, topography and skyline. The macro level summarizes the spatial characteristics and cultural connotations of the town, while the meso-level summarizes the spatial structure, spatial type, spatial type, spatial composition of each type of public space, cultural characteristics and the cultural connotations. The summary analysis shows that the public space of Pianyan ancient town has the common cultural characteristics of Ba-Yu ancient town, and also has the characteristic regional cultural characteristics, with obvious cultural characteristics and high cultural value.Secondly, from the perspective of tourists’ perceptions,we analyze the results of tourists’ perceptions of the cultural characteristics of the public space of the ancient town from three levels, including the overall atmosphere, spatial environment and cultural symbols, using social media data such as online texts and social photos, combined with questionnaires.According to the analysis,at the level of overall atmosphere, the tourists’ perceptions of landscape pattern and ancient town atmosphere are better, while the perceptions of topography and skyline are lower. At the level of spatial environment, visitors show obvious preference for space, mostly concentrating on the two nodes of Huaiyin Bridge,Jielong Bridge-Yunjue Square and the area along the Heshuitan Riverfront, and their perceptions of the spatial composition and morphology of the four types of spaces, namely street space, riverfront space, square space and architectural space, are rated at different levels. At the level of cultural symbols, visitors have a lower evaluation of the perception of architectural form,a higher evaluation of the cultural perception of ancient trees and trees, and a higher evaluation of the daily life, production life and special food of the residents in the customs and folklore. Then, the actual cultural characteristics of the public space of the ancient town and the cultural perception results of tourists are compared and analyzed.In-depth discussion of the characteristics and reasons for the differences in perception: at the macro level of overall atmosphere, the differences in tourists’ perception of the atmosphere and landscape pattern of the ancient town are small, and the atmosphere of the ancient town is presented as primitive and simple, with an obvious landscape pattern, natural environment and little damage;however, the differences in the perception of topography and skyline are large, and the landscape view corridor is blurred. At the mesoscopic level of spatial environment, the perceived differences are large, the spatial structure is unbalanced, the spatial function is blurred, the spatial use preference is obvious, and the cultural connotation of each type of space is not explored enough;at the microscopic level of cultural symbols, the perceived differences in architectural form are large, the architectural style is homogenized, and the architectural decoration and building materials are seriously aged. The differences in the perception of vegetation and greenery are small, and the existing old and valuable trees are well protected, with high cultural value, and should be protected, while the differences in the perception of customs and folklore are small, and the residents’ lives are less disturbed, retaining the original habits and scenes, but the folkloric skills are partly commercialized or tend to be commercialized, and the sense of culture is lost. Finally, based on the analysis of the characteristics and causes of the perceived differences, and guided by the principles of public space optimization, such as the principle of conservation priority, the principle of adaptability, the principle of distinctiveness, and the principle of people-oriented,we propose strategies for the optimization of the overall structure of public space protection, such as protecting the surrounding natural landscape pattern, coordinating and improving the spatial structure, enriching the functional use of space, linking transportation and tour routes, and strengthening the view corridors. At the same time, specific optimization and enhancement designs are carried out for the street space, square space, riverfront space and architecture and other space types. In order to achieve the purpose of protecting the public space of the ancient town and promoting its history and culture.
