| Since the reform and opening up,China’s urbanisation has grown by leaps and bounds and is now the most rapidly urbanising country in the world.Forty years have passed and the residential communities built in the last century have gradually become old and reveal various problems that need to be improved. In the 21 st century,China began to implement the renovation of shanty towns,a policy that was introduced nationwide in 2008.While solving the problems of old communities, shantytown renovation has also brought new problems, such as high pressure on local finances, rising house and land prices, damage to urban memory, environmental pollution, etc. It has proven to be an unsustainable way of renewal.Since the 18th Party Congress, there has been a marked change in the form of urban regeneration, and the shift from quantity to quality has placed higher demands on the regeneration model. From the central to the local level, new models for the transformation of old neighbourhoods were being explored, and it was during this period that the term’patchwork urbanism’ was coined.’Patchwork urbanism’ is not only about repairing the urban environment, but also about repairing the functions of the city, and is dedicated to the preservation and development of urban culture. This paper focuses on the issue of light in older communities in the tropics from the perspective of ’patchwork urbanism’.By interpreting and analysing the actual cases of ’patchwork urbanism’ in China and other outstanding cases of urban regeneration at home and abroad,we collate and summarise existing experiences. The concept of ’patchwork urbanism’ is used to develop strategies and design methods for the improvement of light in old tropical communities, and a more detailed field study is conducted to propose feasible design solutions, with the aim of providing a reference for theoretical and practical design for the renewal of old tropical communities. This paper is divided into five chapters, the first of which is a preface. The background of the study and the significance of the purpose of the study are described, and related concepts and relevant domestic and international research are introduced. The content and methodology of the study and the value of the research are clarified and a framework for the full text is constructed. The second chapter shows the current state of light in old tropical communities and the applicability and necessity of introducing ’patchwork urbanism’.Chapter 3 constructs the strategy and design methodology. The fourth chapter is a design practice in the Guang Yi Dong Li area of the Xin An community in Haikou.Chapter5 provides a summary and outlook. |
