| Historical and cultural towns are rich in content and diverse in types,containing abundant historical and cultural heritage and local characteristics with distinct features of their times.They are invaluable repositories of resources.However,with the advancement of urbanization and modernization processes,along with the increasing demands of economic and social development,certain historical and cultural towns are facing the imminent danger of the rapid disappearance of their specific regional and diverse historical and cultural information,as well as their local characteristics.This manifests in the decline and deterioration of the material foundation of their local cultural heritage and the gradual loss of their distinctive features.It is imperative to protect and inherit these historical and cultural towns.Although the practice of listing-based protection systems has achieved certain effectiveness in the protection and inheritance of traditional historical and cultural towns,traditional protection methods based solely on material remains face significant challenges when confronted with a series of real issues such as the extinction of local characteristics,the destruction of landscape aesthetics,and the loss of cultural connotations.In this context,this exploratory study focuses on Meiyuan Town in Fuping County,the first batch of historic and cultural towns in Shaanxi Province(2019),as the research object.Meiyuan Town is located in the Wei River Plain in the Guanzhong region and used to be the county seat of Fuping County.It has a long history of over 2,440 years.However,due to historical development and changing times,the remaining material heritage in its historical town area is scarce,and the destruction of the historical pattern is severe.By analyzing the current status and practical difficulties of the protection of Meiyuan Town,extracting local perception factors,measuring local perception,interpreting local value connotations,clarifying the key areas of protection,constructing an overall framework for protection and inheritance,and proposing targeted protection strategies,this study aims to promote the protection and inheritance of Meiyuan Town while providing valuable references for the protection and inheritance of other historic and cultural towns.This research is divided into the following three steps: Firstly,from the perspective of "locality," the current status of Meiyuan Town’s basic resources is analyzed in terms of natural geographical environment,historical and cultural features,and socio-economic foundation.The analysis reveals the practical difficulties in the protection of Meiyuan Town.It is found that the historical and cultural context of Meiyuan Town is clear,and the spatial pattern of historical humanistic space in traditional times is rich,but the current situation has undergone significant changes compared to the traditional spatial form.Traditional values are gradually disappearing,and the protected objects are unclear.The town has suffered from serious population loss,making it difficult to maintain the original living order and social network relationships that were intrinsic to the ancient town.Protection methods based on material preservation are inadequate in adapting to these circumstances.Secondly,a method system for value exploration of historic and cultural towns based on local perception is proposed.Starting from the perspective of "people" and combining local emotions,local perception factors are identified and a model for measuring local perception is constructed.Through qualitative research and quantitative analysis,a large amount of textual data is collected through online travelogues and qualitative interviews.Grounded theory’s three-level coding is employed to deeply analyze,summarize,and organize the collected textual data.Based on this,the model for measuring local perception is constructed,and a questionnaire is designed for data collection.The collected data is then subjected to quantitative analysis.The measurement results provide insights into the value connotations and key areas of protection in Meiyuan Town,offering scientific guidance and effective support for subsequent research on protection and inheritance strategies.Finally,a review of past protection work in Meiyuan Town is conducted to identify the problems faced in protection and inheritance,establish a framework for protection and inheritance,and construct a mechanism for protection and inheritance.Additionally,scientifically sound strategies for protection,inheritance,and development are proposed to guide the protection,inheritance,and sustainable development of Meiyuan Town. |
