A Study On Tuokou Historic Town Of Hongjiang City In Hunan

This paper comes from the cooperative project studied by Wuhan University of Technology and Kanangawa University of Japan: The investigation and research of historic city and town in the middle area of Yangtze River. The thesis conducts a profound analysis of the layout, dimension of street and architecture features of Tuokou historic town based on the studies of its natural environment, historic culture, and economic mode with the attempt to propose the mode and method for historic town protection and development.The construction of tuokou-hydropower station will submerge millennium ancient town. This paper studies the Tuokou historic town in the aspect of architecture history, urban design and ethnology. The study starts with the history and current situation of Tuokou town combined with knowledge of geography and sociology and records the timely study as character data.Depending on location advantage Tuokou historic town developed from a small fair into a well-known commercial town, which is entitled "Origin of Tung oil and cradle for lumber merchant" with the influence of the transportation, nature, economy and cultural in Yuan River basin. Tuokou historic town formed the commercial dispersion pattern of "nine streets and stearic roadways" which is preserved well. The appearance of street is free, the dimensions is pleasant, which reflects the traditional ideal that respect the nature and human. There are more than 300 traditional townscapes which have bright characteristic Dong Minority and art images.The paper is composed of 7 chapters. The chapter 1 is introduction. The content from the chapter 2 to chapter 6 is the main body of the paper. It discusses the development of the historic town, the organization of the town's space, the features of the public space, the type and features of the traditional building. Finally, the paper presents the conception for the protection and development of the town: To protect the historic townscape and develop the tour industry. The chapter 7 draws a conclusion and presents the further study on the town.
