The national government has always attached great importance to the protection of traditional villages, and in recent years, its protection focus has changed from static protection to dynamic inheritance, which has greatly curbed the destruction and reduction of traditional villages. However, with the rapid emergence of new technologies and new things, frequent population migration, and the increasing complexity of village subjects,it is difficult to effectively cope with the increasing complexity and uncertainty of traditional villages in planning and protection methods that focus on solving problems in a certain period, and traditional villages are still facing the reality of rapid extinction. As the ancient capital of the thirteen dynasties with a long history, only five state-level traditional villages have survived, and its development adaptability and protection importance are undoubted. How have these traditional villages adapted to complex environmental changes in the past? How can it be more adaptable to the complex environment of the future? These are the issues that need to be explored urgently.Based on the theory of Complex Adaptive System(hereinafter referred to as CAS),this paper explores the essence of traditional village spatial environment system by establishing a complex system concept, and understands its complexity, adaptability and other characteristics.Taking Shichuangou Village,Lantian County, the only provincial traditional village in Xi’an,as the research object, the systematic analysis framework of CAS theory was used to sort out the evolution process and analyze the evolution mechanism of its spatial environment, and on this basis,an adaptive regulation strategy was proposed, which provided reference for the theoretical research and practical exploration of sustainable development of the village and other traditional villages in Xi’an.Firstly,by sorting out the basic content of CAS theory, the rationality and significance of CAS theory in introducing traditional village spatial environment evolution research are judged, and then the traditional village spatial environment system composed of external environment system, adaptive subject system, social and cultural environment system, natural ecological environment system and material space support system is constructed, and the adaptation mechanism and evolution analysis framework of the system are summarized.Secondly, using the perspective of dynamic development of history, the evolution of the spatial environment of Shichuangou Village is divided vertically into four historical stages: formation stage, wandering stage, drastic change stage and stable stage, and horizontally, the change characteristics of the five subsystems of the spatial environment system are elaborated, and the adaptive evolution law of the spatial environment of Shichuangou Village is summarized. On this basis, the evolution mechanism of the spatial environment of traditional villages is analyzed, including the adaptive mechanism of the subject, the bifurcation and mutation mechanism of the system, and the emergence mechanism of hierarchical interaction. Finally, the internal and external dynamics of the future development of Shichuangou Village are analyzed, and the regulation methods of expanding the main capacity, improving the adaptive ability of individuals, and optimizing the overall matching adaptation are proposed,so as to improve the adaptability of the spatial environment of Shichuangou Village, and seek solutions for the sustainable development of traditional villages in the face of complex environments.
