| In In the Jin-Shaanxi Gorge region, traditional villages are the material carriers of the history and culture of the Qin and Jin regions. They rely on the landscape of the Yellow River basin to form the system of Linear Culture heritage. They have gone through historical evolution and mutual influence and have deeply blended with each other.Amidst the process of incessant urbanization, the significance of traditional villages as standalone entities appears to be rather feeble.Nonetheless, through the amalgamation of the surrounding terrain,a cohesive settlement community can be forged, thereby facilitating the exposition of the holistic historical and cultural worth,as well as advancing the renovation of space and augmentation of livelihood in the conjoined village cluster. The aim of this study is to explore the characteristics of the evolution of the human landscape pattern of traditional villages in the Shanxi-Shaanxi Grand Canyon region of the Yellow River Basin. To elucidate the evolutionary trajectory of traditional villages in the Jia County-Lin County section at various levels, and to put forth commensurate strategies for their conservation and progress,a scrutinizing investigation was carried out on a representative assemblage of such villages. To explicate the evolutionary progression of traditional villages across different dimensions in the Jia County-Lin County stretch, and to put forward commensurate measures for their safeguarding and enhancement,a comprehensive investigation was carried out on a representative cluster of such villages. The Yellow River is the main linear element used to explore the evolutionary characteristics of the human landscape of traditional villages under three spatial perspectives, three time scales, and three research dimensions.Secondly, based on the research system and framework, this study specifically explored traditional villages in Jia County-Lin County from a multidimensional and multispatial-temporal perspective: 1)in the macroscopic perspective, the study examined the influence of three linear elements-water systems, roads, and mountains-on the spatial location of traditional villages, and investigated their historical context, spatial patterns, and distribution patterns, summarizing the ecological pattern dimension’s evolution characteristics, patterns, and issues;2)in the mesoscopic perspeftive, this inquiry delved into the evolution of the settlement systems, water systems, farmland systems, and human landscape systems of traditional villages, encapsulating the characteristics, patterns, and predicaments that have shaped their socioeconomic dimension.3)in the microscopic perspective, the study focused on the natural space, architectural space, and human space of traditional villages, exploring the evolution of internal village elements and summarizing the historical-cultural dimension’s evolution characteristics, patterns, and issues. Finally, this study summarized the driving factors of the evolution of the human landscape of traditional villages and proposed guidance strategies for protection and utilization. In this research, the conventional rural community in a distinct historical and cultural area is considered as a cohesive entity, and a conceptual framework is presented to facilitate its systematic spatial expansion.Additionally, this study proposes innovative approaches and tactics for appraising, organizing, conceptualizing, and promoting the sustainable growth of these settlements. |
