Objective: This study aims to understand the participation of medical students in the internal governance activities of colleges and universities and explore the relevant influencing factors. In view of the participation situation and influence factors found, the corresponding measures are proposed which provide some suggestions for improving the system mechanism of medical students’ participation in university internal governance. In order to improve the participation rate of medical students in the internal governance of universities. Methods: Based on the results of the literature analysis, this study designed the Questionnaire of Medical College Students’ Participation in the Internal governance of colleges and universities, divided the fields of internal governance of colleges and universities into students, teaching, logistics, and administrative affairs, and included potential influencing factors into the questionnaire. It was revised by 20 experts in the field of medical education, and then it was convenient to sample 100 medical students for the pre-survey.The medical students in 4 medical colleges were selected as the research objects, and the medical students who met the inclusion criteria were formally investigated.Demographic information, fields of participation, channels of participation, individual factors, and school factors affecting the participation of medical students were investigated by self-made.Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the basic characteristics of medical students and their participation in the internal governance of universities.Social network analysis was used to describe the relationship between medical students with different characteristics and administrative departments. The Chi-square test was used to compare the differences in policies and channels of different schools, and Logistic regression analysis was used to make univariate and multi-factor analysis on the influencing factors of students’ participation in internal governance and sub-fields.Results: A total of 1120 formal questionnaires were issued and 1029 valid questionnaires were collected, with an effective response rate of 91.9%.According to the descriptive analysis, the average age of the respondents was 19.96±1.63 years old,and 825 of them,or 80.2 percent, were former student leaders.983 students(95.5%)participated in the internal governance of colleges and universities.Medical students had the highest participation rate in student affairs, accounting for about 90.0%,mainly participating in the "election of student cadres".The participation rate in administrative affairs was the lowest(28.4%),and medical students mainly participated in the "formulation of student management rules".In the process of participation, medical students contact counselors the most. The main purpose of medical students’ participation in the internal governance of colleges and universities is to exercise their management ability, followed by service to classmates, and 14.9% of medical students participate in the purpose of award evaluation.Social network analysis shows that senior students who have served as student leaders have more contact with administrative departments when participating in governance.Chisquare analysis found that there were differences among different schools in the number of participation channels, feedback activities, participation opportunities, and detailed regulations on students’ participation in governance(P<0.05).The analysis of the overall influencing factors found that the factors affecting medical students’ participation in internal governance included grades, whether they had served as student cadres, personality, school, subject consciousness, and other factors(P<0.05).According to the analysis of influencing factors by field, the factors affecting medical students’ participation in logistics affairs include grade, school, energy, classmates’ participation, the consciousness of rights, and the number of feedback activities.Factors that affect medical students’ participation in administrative affairs governance include grade, energy, governance ability, classmates’ participation, material rewards for participation, and how much students communicate with the school. The factors influencing medical students’ participation in teaching affairs include the grade and response speed of colleges and universities. The factors influencing medical students’ participation in student affairs were grade, energy, and governance ability(P<0.05).Conclusion: Medical students’ participation in the internal governance of colleges and universities is narrow and mainly focuses on student affairs and teaching affairs.Participation channels are relatively simple, mainly through counselors’ or students’ participation. The factors that affect medical students’ participation in the internal governance of colleges and universities include subjective factors such as subject consciousness, governance ability, energy, and character, and objective factors such as school, grade, participation channels, and communication frequency. Therefore, colleges and universities should consolidate the current participation channels and enrich the participation channels of Internet platforms.Colleges and universities should enhance the subject consciousness and participation ability of medical students, improve the policy support for medical students to participate in the internal governance of colleges and universities, improve the communication efficiency between schools and students, and give timely feedback to students’ opinions.
