| This paper explored the character and career of "plague fighter" Wu Lien-teh from the perspective of psychobiography,a qualitative research method,and discussed its multi-causes,which based on Weibo Big Data,a quantitative research method.This paper analyzed the reasons of his successful fight against pneumonic plague in troubled times a hundred years ago,and the inevitable factors why people still respect and commemorate him a hundred years later.The first study is to find out the personality and environmental factors of Wu Lien-teh in the elimination of the difficulties and successfully exterminating the pneumonic plague in Manchuria,by using the method of psychobiography and " back tracking",combining the positive personality theory in positive psychology with the Confucian ideal personality,self-strengthening personality in traditional Chinese psychology and the positive psychological thought of Pre-Qin Confucianism.It is found that early experience,family environment,personal growth and peer influence all play an important role in the formation of self-strengthening personality;His high sense of national identity and patriotism laid the foundation for him to serve the motherland.Strong social orientation and achievement motivation encourage him to strive for the goal;Excellent medical skills and personal ability are crucial for him to overcome the pneumonic plague.Meanwhile,the support offered by the Qing government is also an indispensable external condition.It was these that enabled him to achieve the ultimate victory in the fight against pneumonic plague,and completed the anti-epidemic undertakings that Japan,Russia and even many western developed countries could hardly finish at the time under COVID-19.The second study is to explore the inevitable factors that Wu Lien-teh remain best remembered after half a century along the path of his career,by using the method of psychobiography and combining with Super’s career development stage theory and career role theory.According to the characteristics of Wu Lien-teh’s career changes,his whole life can be divided into three stages: the stage of career growth and exploration;the stage of career establishment and maintenance;the stage of career decline.This paper specifies the three key turning events in Wu Lien-teh’s career,as well as the changes of his career roles and major contributions in the three periods.During the second stage(30 years of service in China),his contributions and achievements to China’s anti-epidemic,public health and medical education reform undertakings are the main reasons why he is remembered by later generations.Particularly,the successful fight against the plague in 1910 is the core factor.The third study is to explore social medias’ comments and attitudes on Wu Lien-teh’s contribution,career and related events,finally get four primary topics:education experience,Manchuria plague,career contribution and memorial after death,by using Weibo Big Data and carrying out topic model to analyze the Weibo comments about Wu Lien-teh for recent two years.Through comparing the research results of Weibo text topic model with conclusions of psychobiography in first study and second study,the results show that though the results of the two methods are slightly different,the overall consistency is high,which can be verified and supplemented with each other.In the future,the research results of Wu Lien-teh psychobiography can be further promoted through social medias to achieve greater intervention and demonstration.Letting more people gain an in-depth understanding of the real scholar who sacrifices himself but benefits mankind.To some extent,he can be our example and can offer guidance to our career development.In conclusion,this paper deeply analyzes Wu Lien-teh’s personality and career,adopting the qualitative research method and supplemented by quantitative research method,which is not only a new insight and perspective to understand Wu Lien-teh,but also an innovation and breakthrough in the research method of psychobiography.The findings can provide theoretical basis and demonstration cases for excellent medical personnel training.This paper summarizes Wu Lien-teh’s patriotism in a systematic way,improving the content and effect of career education,which possesses great application value. |
