Plagued by the COVID-19 crisis,the world is now fraught with health threat and social-economic contradictions.To play down the impact of the pandemic,global dialogue is needed to make a difference,which gives rise to the role of online conference and remote interpreting.Therefore,the interpreter conducted a simulated English-Chinese consecutive interpreting of a webinar titled COVID-19 and the World of Work: Implications for Persons with Disabilities to explicate on the application of deverbalization in remote interpreting.On the one hand,interpreting a conference themed on the current crisis is of practical meaning.On the other hand,the experience drawn from this simulated remote interpreting task can hopefully inspire other interpreters in a time of new media.In this interpreting task,the interpreter has encountered a few challenges in terms of comprehension and reformulation.For the comprehension phase,there are three major challenges: lost information in listening due to remote-interpreting associated problems,overload of information in long sentences,and unorganized discourses.For the reformulation phase,challenges can be categorized into four kinds: memory and note-reading failures,expressions that the interpreter was not able to find equivalents at that moment,the redundant information,as well as complex sentences.Based on the idea of deverbalization,the interpreter solved most of the challenges by applying strategies such as visualization,inferencing and compression.Furthermore,the author evaluated her work according to Buhler’s criteria to perceive her limitations.Finally,the author hopes that this report could provide guidance for the work of not only herself but also her peers.
